The Importance of Pregnancy Examination and ANC Facilities for Pregnant Women in Aek Kuo District

Introduction

Pregnancy is a critical period in a woman's life, and regular health check-ups are essential to ensure the health and well-being of both the mother and the baby. In Indonesia, the health status of mothers and children (KIA) is still far from expectations, with a high maternal mortality rate (MMR) of 359 per 100,000 live births, as reported by the 2012 Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey (SDKI). The Aek Korsik Health Center, located in Aek Kuo District, has made significant efforts to improve maternal and child health, with a delivery coverage assisted by health workers of 85.77% in 2017. However, there is still a need to understand the relationship between pregnant women's behavior about pregnancy examination and the use of antenatal care (ANC) facilities at the Aek Korsik Health Center.

Background

The Aek Korsik Health Center serves a population of 494 pregnant women, with 60 of them taken as a sample for this study. The study aimed to determine the relationship between the behavior of pregnant women in pregnancy examination with the use of ANC service facilities at the Aek Korsik Health Center in 2018. The type of research used was quantitative research with a cross-sectional design.

Methodology

The study was conducted at the Aek Korsik Health Center in July 2018. The population studied consisted of all pregnant women who were more than 7 months old, mothers who would give birth, or mothers who were in the past 3 months and were domiciled in Labuhan Batu Utara Regency. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively and used the Chi-Square test, Exact Fisher, and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test.

Results

The results showed that the highest predisposing characteristics of pregnant women were those aged 20-35 years (73.3%), with high school education (51.7%), working as housewives (90.0%), had knowledge Less (66.7%), as well as attitudes in the medium category (75.0%). In terms of ability, the perception of pregnant women towards ANC is in the medium category (60.0%), but the source of information about ANC is less (81.7%) and the ANC service process is also in the medium category (76.6%).

Discussion

The analysis shows that only sources of information have a significant relationship with the use of ANC facilities at the Aek Korsik Health Center (P = 0.031). This indicates the importance of access to good information for pregnant women to understand and utilize the available health services. The availability of services, assessed in the good category (80.0%), also shows the potential to increase the scope of ANC services.

Conclusion

The results of this study highlight the importance of access to good information for pregnant women to understand and utilize the available health services. Therefore, it is recommended that pregnant women increase their self-awareness about the importance of health checks during pregnancy.
