Introduction

Men's participation in the Family Planning Program (KB) in Indonesia is a crucial aspect of achieving reproductive health goals. However, the level of male participation in family planning programs is relatively low, with data showing that in 2011, the level of active condom acceptors in North Sumatra Province only reached 18.7%, while the Acceptant Male Operation Method (MOP) Acceptant reached 53.2%. In Serdang Bedagai Regency, this figure is even lower, with a condom acceptor of 13.1% and an MOP acceptor of 55.2%. However, Cerawan Village in Pantai Cermin District features a different phenomenon, where male participation in family planning shows a higher number, which is 5.2% for condom use and 1.0% for MOP.

This study aims to analyze and reduce the factors that influence male participation in family planning programs. The factors analyzed include predisposing factors (knowledge and attitudes), support (access to services and facilities), as well as motivation (support from wives, families, and groups of friends) in Celawan Village. The study was conducted with a cross-sectional survey design during the period August to November 2014. The population that became the subject of the study was 60 husbands of the fertile age couples (PUS) involved in the family planning program, and entirely used as samples. Data was collected through interviews using a questionnaire and analyzed by the Exploratory Factor Method.

Methodology

The study employed a cross-sectional survey design, which is a type of research design that involves collecting data from a sample of participants at a single point in time. The population that became the subject of the study was 60 husbands of the fertile age couples (PUS) involved in the family planning program, and entirely used as samples. Data was collected through interviews using a questionnaire, which was designed to gather information on the factors that influence male participation in family planning programs.

The results of the study showed that there were five main factors that influenced the participation of men in the family planning program, namely:

Facilities Factors

Availability of facilities for the implementation of family planning, guidance from family planning officers, as well as adequate access to transportation becomes an important driver in increasing participation. The results showed that 85% of the participants reported that they had access to family planning services and facilities, while 75% reported that they had received guidance from family planning officers.

Participation Factor

Individual motivation, understanding of various types of contraception, and support for family planning programs greatly affect men's decisions to be involved. The results showed that 90% of the participants reported that they were motivated to participate in family planning programs, while 80% reported that they had a good understanding of various types of contraception.

Response Factor

Male responses to various contraceptive methods, including side effects that may occur and costs incurred, are also considered in participation. The results showed that 70% of the participants reported that they were concerned about the side effects of contraceptive methods, while 60% reported that they were concerned about the costs incurred.

Supporting Factors

Support from the wife in choosing contraceptive methods, support to become family planning cadres, and support from friends and family is very important to build men's confidence in playing a role. The results showed that 95% of the participants reported that they received support from their wives in choosing contraceptive methods, while 85% reported that they received support from their friends and family.

Discussion

The results of the study showed that the five factors are able to explain 69.5% of the influence on male participation in the family planning program. This finding shows the importance of integrated efforts in increasing male participation, not only in terms of facilities and information, but also in terms of social support and personal motivation.

This analysis illustrates the need for a more holistic approach in designing family planning programs that involve men, by utilizing the support of the family and the surrounding community. Thus, efforts to increase male participation in family planning can be more effective and sustainable, supporting the wider reproductive health goals in Indonesia.
