Introduction

Conservation of library materials is a crucial aspect of maintaining literacy and knowledge. In the Department of Archives and Pematangsiantar City Library, the conservation analysis of Dutch library materials was carried out to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of the methods applied based on ten indicators. These indicators include cleaning documents, repairing damaged library materials, moisture control, lamination, protective coating, and regulating the relative temperature and humidity in the storage space. In addition, the maintenance of the cleanliness of the storage space, lighting settings, fumigation, and survey of the physical condition of the collection are also part of this analysis.

Methodology

The research method used is descriptive qualitative with the population consisting of the head of the library material preservation section and two librarians. The study aimed to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of the methods applied in conserving Dutch library materials in the Department of Archives and Pematangsiantar City Library.

Results

The results of the study showed that active conservation activities, especially in cleaning library materials, still used very simple methods. Librarians use tools such as brushes, dust cleansers, cloth, and vacuum cleaner to clean books. The book repair process was carried out directly, without special placement for damaged collections. The humidity control activity is also not regularly scheduled, which shows the lack of attention to this aspect. This has the potential to cause further damage to library materials.

Active Conservation Methods

The lamination of Dutch library materials in this library does not use Washi Tissue, which is a material that is more environmentally friendly and is more suitable for long-term conservation purposes. As an alternative, the use of transparent plastic cover for encapsulation is not equipped with a document folder or slipcase that should be able to provide better protection.

Passive Conservation Methods

In the aspect of passive conservation, monitoring of relative temperature and humidity in the storage space is only carried out with a standard temperature of 18 ° C, without further arrangements to ensure the comfort and safety of collections. Maintenance of the cleanliness of the storage space is carried out with simple techniques, such as sweeping and mopping, and using a camphor to repel pests. However, the absence of routine fumigation measures adds to the risk of damage to the library material due to pest attacks.

Lighting Settings and Collection Survey

Lighting settings in the library use ordinary lamps and sunlight, with special curtains to block direct rays. However, the challenges remain in maintaining the optimal quality of lighting without damaging the collection. The survey of the physical condition of the collection is carried out every three months, but it needs more emphasis on continuous maintenance actions.

Conclusion

From the results of this analysis, it can be concluded that the conservation of Dutch library materials in the Department of Archives and Pematangsiantar City Library still relies on manual methods that have many shortcomings. An increase is needed in the use of more modern and systematic conservation techniques to ensure the sustainability and durability of collections. Thus, increasing awareness and training on appropriate conservation techniques is very important for librarians to be able to carry out their duties more effectively in maintaining this valuable collection of libraries.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Increase the use of modern and systematic conservation techniques to ensure the sustainability and durability of collections.
Provide training and awareness on appropriate conservation techniques for librarians to be able to carry out their duties more effectively.
Implement routine fumigation measures to prevent pest attacks on library materials.
Use Washi Tissue or other environmentally friendly materials for lamination purposes.
Regularly schedule humidity control activities to prevent further damage to library materials.
