Introduction

Heat polymerization acrylic resin is a widely used material in the field of dentistry as a bite basis. However, the use of this resin is not without its challenges, one of which is the decrease in material properties, including the impact strength. One method to improve these properties is to apply aloe vera (aloe vera) which has an antibacterial effect due to flavonoids and saponins. This study aims to analyze the difference in the strength of the impact acrylic resin of heat polymerization after being smeared with 36% aloe vera gel with various exposure times, namely 5, 10, and 15 minutes.

Materials and Methods

This study involved making samples measuring 65x10x2.5 mm from heat polymerization acrylic resin, with a total of 10 pieces for each treatment group. The group that was tested was divided into four categories: Group without applying (I), a group smeared with aloe vera gel 36% for 5 minutes (II), for 10 minutes (III), and for 15 minutes (IV). The cast mixture used for making molds is made with a ratio of 200 gr gypsum and 100 ml of water. After the process of drying the cast, the surface of the cast and master plates are smeared with vaseline to facilitate the release of the mold. Acrylic resin is mixed with monomers in a ratio of 9 gr: 3.6 ml, then placed into a mold for polymerization in the waterbath with a temperature of 100 °C for 20 minutes.

After the polymerization process, the sample is polished until smooth and smooth before smeared with aloe vera gel. Aloe vera gel is prepared from fresh aloe vera leaves using the maceration method, and each treatment group is smeared with 10 ml of gel on the entire surface before it is wrapped in plastic during the specified time of processing. Testing the strength of the impact is done using Izod Digital Impact Tester with a swing angle of 20 ° and the weight of a beating 5.5 J.

Results

The analysis results show that the average impact strength for each group is as follows: Group I has a value of 27.21 ± 0.65059 J/m²; group II of 25.39 ± 0.34635 J/m²; group III reached 24.29 ± 0.56204 J/m²; and group IV with a value of 22.42 ± 0.45934 J/m². From the one-way ANOVA test results, it is known that there is a significant difference in the strength of the impact between groups with the value of P = 0.00 (p <0.05).

Discussion

From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the 36% aloe vera gel is negatively affecting the strength of the heat polymerization resin, with the highest impact strength in the group without applying and decreases with the increase in the time of the gel exposure. This shows that although aloe vera gel has good antibacterial properties, its use in acrylic resins needs to be carefully considered so as not to reduce the mechanical strength of the material. Further research is expected to explore the combination of the time of processing and the concentration of gel to maximize the benefits of the antibacterial nature of aloe vera gel without sacrificing the power of material.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study has shown that the application of aloe vera gel 36% with different exposure times can affect the strength of the impact acrylic resin of heat polymerization.
