Introduction

The use of organic fertilizers has become increasingly important in modern agriculture, as it provides a sustainable alternative to synthetic fertilizers. One of the key factors in determining the quality of compost is the ratio of carbon (C) to nitrogen (N), also known as the C/N ratio. A balanced C/N ratio is essential for the decomposition process, as it affects the microbial activity and the overall quality of the compost. In this study, we conducted a comparative analysis of the C, N, C/N, P, and K content in compost originated from the moon flower (Tithonia diversifolia) and Nippon leaves (Eupatorium odoratum L.) with a variation of composting time.

Methodology

The study was conducted in three regencies in North Sumatra, Indonesia: Karo Regency, Dairi Regency, and Humbang Hasundutan Regency. The sampling was carried out randomly, and the samples were collected from the same location. After cutting, the samples were dried and mixed with the same weight ratio. The composting process was carried out by adding pork and bran dung, and using EM4 as a starter, with a variation of composting time for 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 days.

The content testing was carried out using several methods:

C-organic analysis: The Walkey Black method was used to determine the C-organic content.
Total Nitrogen (N): The Kjeldahl method was used to determine the total nitrogen content.
Total Phosphorus (P): The spectrophotometry method was used to determine the total phosphorus content as P2O5.
Potassium (K): The atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used to determine the potassium content as K2O.

These procedures were applied to both types of samples, both before and after the composting process.

Results

The results showed that on the 15th day, the optimal composting time, the C/N ratio for the flower compost of the month reached 10.08, while for the Nippon leaf compost of 10.48. These values indicate that both products have good quality.

For moon flower compost, the C-organic content was recorded at 25.50%, total nitrogen of 2.53%, total phosphorus as P2O5 was 0.7688%, and potassium as K2O was 4.169%. On the other hand, nippon leaf compost contained C-organic content of 25.01%, total nitrogen 2.39%, total phosphorus as P2O5 was 0.7377%, and potassium as K2O was 3.372%.

Analysis and Implications of Research Results

From the results obtained, it can be concluded that the moon flower and nippon leaves can be used as raw material for organic fertilizer. The C/N content obtained is close to the ideal ratio between 10 to 20, which shows that the resulting compost does not only meet compost quality standards according to SNI 19-7030-2004, but also has the potential to increase soil fertility.

The use of these two types of plants as compost raw materials is also very relevant in the context of environmental sustainability. By utilizing renewable plant waste, reducing waste and the use of local resources become more efficient. In addition, the use of organic fertilizer from moon flowers and nippon leaves can contribute to sustainable agriculture, which is important for the health of ecosystems and environmentally friendly agricultural production.

Conclusion

Overall, this research not only provides insight into the composition of nutrition in compost, but also strengthens the importance of the practice of managing intelligent and sustainable agricultural waste. This can provide long-term benefits for farmers and the community as a whole, as well as support the purpose of sustainability in the agricultural sector.
