Characterization of Kecombrang Stem Pulp using the X-Ray Difraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infra Red (FT-IR) Methods: A Comprehensive Analysis

Introduction

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the characterization of plant-based materials, particularly those derived from tropical plants. One such plant is the Kecombrang, a type of ginger plant native to Southeast Asia. The stem pulp of the Kecombrang plant has been found to possess unique properties that make it an attractive material for various industrial applications. In this study, we employed the X-Ray Difraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infra Red (FT-IR) methods to characterize the Kecombrang stem pulp and explore its potential uses.

Materials and Methods

In this study, we used the XRD method to analyze the crystalline structure of the Kecombrang stem pulp. The XRD diffractogram was obtained using a Bruker D8 Discover diffractometer with a Cu-Kα radiation source. The diffractogram was analyzed using the Jade 9 software to determine the crystallinity index of the material.

We also used the FT-IR method to analyze the functional groups present in the Kecombrang stem pulp. The FT-IR spectrum was obtained using a Thermo Scientific Nicolet iS50 FT-IR spectrometer. The spectrum was analyzed using the OMNIC software to identify the functional groups present in the material.

Results

The XRD diffractogram of the Kecombrang stem pulp showed three highest diffraction peaks with a widened curve line. The rotary angle of 2θ used in measurements ranged from 5º to 70º with a scan speed of 2 degrees per minute. The analysis of the XRD diffractogram revealed a crystallinity index of 73.05%, indicating a relatively high level of crystallinity in the material.

The FT-IR spectrum of the Kecombrang stem pulp showed ten peaks of organic compound function groups. Of these ten peaks, five were functional groups that act as cellulose builders, with each wavelength measured at 3394.72 cm⁻¹; 2893.22 cm⁻¹; 1639.49 cm⁻¹; 1427.32 cm⁻¹; and 898.83 cm⁻¹.
