Introduction

Salak Padangsidimpuan, scientifically known as Salacca Sumatra BECC, is a popular fruit in Indonesia. This study aims to evaluate the impact of fruit rot diseases on Salak Padangsidimpuan based on agroecological factors and identify the type of fungus causing the rot in this salak fruit. The research was conducted in the fields and laboratories of five districts in Indonesia, namely Batang Angkola District, Angkola Barumunar, Angkola Serata, East Angkola, and Padangsidimpuan District, from October 2013 to April 2014.

Background of the Study

Salak Padangsidimpuan is a type of fruit that is highly susceptible to fruit rot diseases. The disease can significantly influence the quality and quantity of crop yields. The high incidence of disease in several locations indicates that environmental factors and agricultural practices applied in the area affect the development of pathogens. For example, moist weather conditions and high temperatures can support the growth of mushrooms chaloropsis sp. This study aims to investigate the factors contributing to the development of fruit rot diseases in Salak Padangsidimpuan and identify the type of fungus causing the rot.

Methodology

The study was conducted in the fields and laboratories of five districts in Indonesia. The research involved collecting data on the incidence and severity of fruit rot diseases in Salak Padangsidimpuan. The data were collected from October 2013 to April 2014. The study also involved identifying the type of fungus causing the rot in the salak fruit.

Results

The results showed that the incidence of disease and the severity of the highest disease were found in Sibio-Bio Village, East Angkola District, with a percentage of 57.4% and 73% respectively. Meanwhile, the lowest level was found in Pinang Padang Village, Batang Angkola District and Siam Borik Dolok Village, South Angkola District, with a percentage of 2.97% and 0.48% respectively. The main cause of salak spoilage is white fungus identified as chaloropsis sp.

Further research is needed to investigate the factors contributing to the development of fruit rot diseases in Salak Padangsidimpuan and to identify more effective control strategies.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations. The study was conducted in only five districts in Indonesia, and the results may not be generalizable to other areas. Additionally, the study only investigated the factors contributing to the development of fruit rot diseases in Salak Padangsidimpuan and did not investigate other factors that may affect the quality and quantity of crop yields.
