Introduction

Helicobacter pylori infection (H. pylori) is a significant health problem that has long been a concern in the field of obstetrics, especially in pregnant women. This study aims to detect the presence of H. pylori infection in pregnant women who experience hyperemesis gravidarum compared to normal pregnant women, using an antenatal serological examination commonly done. Research Methods

This research is analytic and uses a cross-sectional study approach. The research subjects include primigravida women aged between 20 and 35 years with a gestational age of no more than 16 weeks. The study was conducted at several hospitals in Medan, between October 29, 2009 and 30 June 2010. The procedures carried out include history, physical examination, ultrasound, and a series of laboratory examinations to assess general health conditions. Among these are routine blood tests, blood chemistry, and serology to detect the presence of IG G antibodies to H. pylori. H. Pylori infection is considered positive if the serum results show IG G detected through the ELISA method. The diagnosis of hyperemesis gravidarum is established based on the symptoms of excessive vomiting (more than three times a day) and the positive results of ketone on urinalysis examination.

From this study, it was found that 82.6% of 23 patients with hyperemesis gravidarum showed the results of positive serum IG G, while only 47.8% of 23 normal pregnant patients showed similar results. Data processing shows a significant relationship between seropositive H. pylori and the condition of hyperemesis gravidarum with the value of P <0.05. This finding suggests that H. pylori infection may play a significant role in the development of hyperemesis gravidarum.
