Introduction

In this study, we explore the synthesis of Schiff bases through the condensation of dialdehyde cellulose oxidation results of α-selulose kecombrang stems and their use as adsorption of iron ions Fe³⁺.

Characteristics and Analysis of Cellulose Dialdehyde

The formation of dialdehyde cellulose is characterized by the formation of brick red deposits when tested with fehling reagents. This indicates the presence of aldehyde groups (C = O) in the cellulose molecule. The results of the analysis show an increase in solubility in water and the emergence of vibration peaks in wave numbers 1627.92 cm⁻¹, which further confirms the presence of aldehyde groups. The dialdehyde cellulose produced has a degree of oxidation of 47.09% and carbonyl content of 11.59%.

The characterization of Schiff bases is done using FT-IR, which shows the peak on wave numbers 1635.64 cm⁻¹ for Schiff I and 1627.92 cm⁻¹ bases for Schiff II bases, signifying the formation of an imina bond (c = n). This indicates the successful condensation between the amine group from diethylene triamin and phenylhidrazin with aldehyde groups.

Morphological Analysis and Adsorption Power

Morphological analysis using SEM shows changes in cellulose surface structure, dialdehyde cellulose, Schiff I base, and Schiff II base, which is getting bigger and rough. This indicates an increase in surface area that can contribute to the ability of adsorption. The test results show that the maximum absorption occurs at 0.1 g of cellulose, cellulose dialdehyde, and Schiff I base at a concentration of 200 ppm, with a percentage of successive absorption is 24.09%, 27.42%, and 36.69%. As for the Schiff II base, the maximum absorption occurs at a concentration of 300 ppm, with a percentage of 32.89%.

Adsorption Mechanism

The adsorption mechanism of the Schiff base is believed to occur through the formation of hydrogen bonds between the imina group of the Schiff base and the iron ions (Fe³⁺). This is supported by the FT-IR results, which show the presence of a peak at 1635.64 cm⁻¹ for Schiff I and 1627.92 cm⁻¹ bases for Schiff II bases, indicating the formation of an imina bond (c = n).

From the adsorption power analysis carried out, it can be concluded that the Schiff base produced from the condensation of dialdehyde cellulose with phenylhydrazine and diethylene triamin has a great potential in increasing the adsorption of iron metal ions (Fe³⁺) in the solution. This opens opportunities for further utilization in water treatment applications, especially in removing heavy metal contaminants from liquid waste. By continuing to develop and optimize this process, it is expected to create a more efficient and environmentally friendly solution in overcoming the problem of heavy metal pollution in the environment.
