Relationship between Food Intake, Physical Activity with the Nutritional Status of Students at the Al-Kautsar Al-Akbar Islamic Boarding School

Introduction

Adolescence is a critical phase of human development, marked by significant physical, emotional, and psychological changes. During this period, nutritional needs increase to support better physical growth and development. In the pesantren environment, nutritional and health problems often arise, especially among students. This study aims to analyze the relationship between food intake and physical activity with the nutritional status of students at the Al-Kautsar Al-Akbar Islamic Boarding School.

Background

The pesantren environment, characterized by a boarding school setting, presents unique challenges for students' nutritional and health needs. Students in this environment often have limited access to nutritious food, leading to malnutrition and related health problems. Furthermore, the boarding school setting can also lead to a lack of physical activity, as students may have limited opportunities for outdoor play and exercise. This study seeks to investigate the relationship between food intake, physical activity, and nutritional status among students at the Al-Kautsar Al-Akbar Islamic Boarding School.

Methodology

This study employed a cross-sectional design, with a population consisting of class VIII A and IX A students, totaling 50 people. The sampling technique used was total sampling, so the population and sample in this study are the same. Food intake data was collected through food measurement questionnaires and food scales, while physical activity data were obtained through the physical activity level form sheet. Univariate data analysis illustrated the frequency distribution of food intake, physical activity, and nutritional status of students, while bivariate analysis used chi-square tests to describe the relationship between food intake and nutritional status, as well as student activity to nutritional status.

Results

The results of this study showed a significant correlation between food intake, namely energy (p = 0.008), carbohydrates (p = 0.013), and fat (p = 0.011) against the nutritional status of students. However, no significant correlation was found between protein intake (p = 0.063) and nutritional status. In addition, the results of the study also showed a significant relationship between physical activity (p = 0.014) and the nutritional status of students.

The findings of this study suggest that food intake plays a crucial role in determining the nutritional status of students at the Al-Kautsar Al-Akbar Islamic Boarding School. The significant correlation between energy, carbohydrates, and fat intake and nutritional status highlights the importance of providing students with a balanced diet that meets their nutritional needs.
