Introduction

In today's digital age, libraries have transformed into vibrant hubs of knowledge and information, catering to the diverse needs of students, researchers, and academics. The digital library of Medan State University (Unimed) is no exception, providing a vast array of resources and services to support the academic and research endeavors of its community. However, the effectiveness of reference services in meeting the needs of library information is a crucial aspect that requires evaluation and improvement. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of reference services in the Unimed digital library, identifying areas of strength and weakness, and providing recommendations for improvement.

Methodology

This study employed a quantitative descriptive method, involving 485 visitors who utilized reference services during the period January to December 2018. A sample of 83 people was determined using the Slovin formula, ensuring a representative sample of the population. Data collection was carried out through a questionnaire and literature study, with data analysis using the frequency distribution formula.

Results

The results of this study revealed that most of the reference services in the Unimed Digital Library had been running effectively in meeting the information needs of library visitors. However, several aspects still need to be improved to maximize the effectiveness of services.

Communication and Interaction

According to the results, as many as 53.01% of respondents revealed that library staff (librarians) only sometimes communicate to understand the needs of users. This indicates a need for improvement in the interaction between librarians and information users, ensuring that the needs of users are better met.

Learning Aspect

Furthermore, 49.40% of respondents felt that librarians were less friendly when giving instructions or teaching in the information search process. This difficulty can cause users to feel uncomfortable to ask questions or ask for help, which in turn affects the effectiveness of the services provided.

Guidance Indicators

Finally, related to guidance indicators, 42.17% of respondents argue that the guidance given by librarians tends to be less detailed in explaining the use of library services and facilities. It is essential for librarians to provide complete and easy-to-understand information so that users can feel more confident in using library services.

Conclusion

In conclusion, although the reference services in the Unimed digital library are mostly effective, there are several aspects that need to be considered to maximize the use of services. To increase the effectiveness of services, training for librarians in terms of communication and interaction with users is very important. In addition, a more friendly and detailed approach in providing guidance will help users feel more comfortable and educated in using information resources available in the library.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Training for Librarians: Provide training for librarians on effective communication and interaction with users, ensuring that their needs are better met.
Friendly and Detailed Approach: Encourage librarians to adopt a more friendly and detailed approach in providing guidance, making it easier for users to understand and use library services.
User Feedback Mechanism: Establish a user feedback mechanism to collect feedback from users, enabling librarians to identify areas of improvement and make necessary adjustments.
Continuous Evaluation: Conduct regular evaluations of reference services to assess their effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.

The implementation of these recommendations will contribute to the development of knowledge and information among students and other academics, ultimately enhancing the academic and research endeavors of the Unimed community. By providing effective reference services, the Unimed digital library can become a more optimal hub of knowledge and information, supporting the academic and research needs of its community.
