Iron deficiency anemia is a serious public health problem that affects countries with low, medium, and high incomes. This condition has significant health consequences and can impact the social and economic development of the community. Teenage women, especially, are groups that are at high risk of experiencing anemia, especially iron deficiency anemia. Therefore, it is essential to encourage positive precautions among young women, and knowledge of anemia becomes very important in this context. With good knowledge, adolescents can recognize and choose foods that can increase iron intake and understand the factors that can inhibit the absorption of these iron.

The Importance of Knowledge about Iron Deficiency Anemia

The purpose of this study is to describe the level of knowledge of students of the S1 Development Economic Study Program at the University of North Sumatra regarding iron deficiency anemia. This study aims to provide insights into the knowledge of economic students about iron deficiency anemia and its impact on their health.

Research Methods and Results

This study uses a descriptive method with a cross-sectional approach. The number of samples used in this study was 90 people, taken by the total sampling technique. Data obtained through a questionnaire will be used to measure respondents' knowledge about iron deficiency anemia. From the results of the study, it was found that most respondents had sufficient knowledge about iron deficiency anemia, with a percentage of 46.7%. This shows that although there is adequate understanding, there is still space to increase knowledge among female students regarding the importance of iron and its impact on health.

The Role of Knowledge in Preventing Anemia

Enough knowledge of iron deficiency anemia among female students is very important, especially in the context of prevention and handling anemia. With adequate knowledge, they can be more proactive in choosing nutritious foods that are rich in iron, as well as understanding the factors that affect the absorption of iron, such as the presence of vitamin C which can increase the absorption of non-heme iron, and foods that contain phytate or tannins that can prevent it. Therefore, it is essential to continue research and education efforts that aim to strengthen knowledge about iron deficiency anemia and support the application of healthy eating patterns among female students.

More intensive health education and health campaigns about anemia, especially for young women, are expected to increase their awareness and understanding. In the long run, this increase in knowledge is expected to not only prevent anemia, but also contributes to better health and socio-economic welfare among young women, so that they can play an active role in community development. This will not only provide benefits for individual health, but will also have a positive impact on the community as a whole.
