Introduction

The Karo community in Semangat Village, Barusjahe District, Karo Regency, has a rich cultural heritage that is deeply rooted in their traditional agricultural practices. The use of traditional agricultural equipment is an essential part of their daily lives, and the lexicon associated with these equipment is a vital aspect of their cultural identity. This study aims to examine the lexicon of traditional agricultural equipment used by the Karo community in Semangat Village, with a focus on community understanding of the terms related to agriculture.

Background

The Karo community has a long history of agricultural practices that have been passed down from generation to generation. Their traditional agricultural equipment is an integral part of their cultural heritage, and the lexicon associated with these equipment is a vital aspect of their cultural identity. However, with the increasing modernization and use of technology in agriculture, traditional terms are often forgotten by the younger generation. This study aims to examine the lexicon of traditional agricultural equipment used by the Karo community in Semangat Village, with a focus on community understanding of the terms related to agriculture.

Methodology

This study uses ecolinguistic theory as a basis for understanding the lexicon of traditional agricultural equipment used by the Karo community in Semangat Village. The methods applied in this study are qualitative and quantitative. Data collection is done in several ways, such as observation, interviews, and questionnaire techniques. In the interview technique, the researcher applies a tapping, capable and capable technique, while the record and record technique is used to document the results of the interview. The questionnaire was also distributed to respondents to explore more information about their understanding of the lexicon of traditional agricultural equipment.

Results

The results of the analysis showed that there were 22 types of traditional agricultural equipment lexicons used by the Karo community in the Semangat Village. Through ecolinguistic parameters and three social praxis dimensions, researchers succeeded in describing the meaning and function of each existing term. This is important because the use of the right lexicon reflects the expertise and knowledge of the public towards agricultural cultivation that has been inherited from generation to generation.

Furthermore, testing the level of understanding of the Karo community of the lexicon of agricultural equipment shows varied results. As many as 4,129 people (62.82%) are in category A, which show high understanding, while 952 people (14.48%) are included in the category B, 327 people (4.97%) in the C category, 574 people (8.73%) in category D, and 590 people (8.97%) in the E category, which shows a low understanding. This data gives a clear picture of how well the Karo community recognizes and understands the terms of agriculture that is part of their culture and daily lives.

Discussion

This research not only reveals the importance of lexicons in the context of agriculture, but also highlights how traditional knowledge can be threatened by its existence in the modern era. With the increasing modernization and use of technology in agriculture, traditional terms are often forgotten by the younger generation. Therefore, efforts to preserve the lexicon and traditional knowledge are important to do, so that future generations can still recognize and understand the cultural heritage that is around them.
