Analysis of Efficiency in the Use of Production Input on Red Chili Farming (Case: Beganding Village, Simpang Empat District, Karo Regency)

Introduction

Karo Regency, North Sumatra, is renowned for being one of the largest red chili production centers in the region. In 2014, the harvest area of red chili in Karo Regency reached 4,663 ha with a productivity of 7.21 tons/ha. Despite having the largest harvest area compared to other production centers such as Coal and Simalungun districts, the productivity of red chili in Karo Regency is even lower. This research aims to analyze the effect of the use of production input on the production of red chili plants and assess the optimization level of its use in Beganding Village, Simpang Empat District, Karo Regency.

Research Methods

This study employs the purposive sampling method to determine the location of the study and the accidental sampling method for sample determination. The data obtained were analyzed using multiple regression analysis with the Cobb-Douglas function to measure the effect of production input on red chili production. The level of efficiency in the use of production input is then analyzed by the marginal production value method (NPM) divided by the price of input.

Research Results

The results of the regression analysis show that together, production inputs such as fertilizers, pesticides, labor, and seeds significantly affect the production of red chili (the significance value of F-count 0,000 <0.05). However, partially only fertilizer and seeds that significantly affect production. The R2 value of 0.849 shows that 84.9% of production variables can be explained by the variable fertilizer, pesticides, labor, and seeds. This indicates that these factors play an important role in determining production results.

Efficiency Analysis of Production Input Use

Efficiency analysis shows that the use of fertilizer at the study site has an efficiency value of 34.97, pesticides of 3.42, labor 5.64, and seeds of 0.09. This efficiency value indicates that the use of production input at the study site is not overall efficient.

Based on the results of the study, here are some recommendations to increase the efficiency of the use of production inputs in red chili farming in Beganding Village:

Increasing the Efficiency of Using Fertilizer

Farmers can optimize the use of fertilizer by applying balanced fertilization techniques and using organic fertilizer to increase soil fertility and reduce the use of chemical fertilizers.

Improving the Use of Pesticides

Farmers need to be equipped with knowledge about the use of precise and safe pesticides. The application of integrated pest control systems (IPM) can be a solution to reduce the use of chemical pesticides and increase environmental sustainability.

Improving Labor Efficiency

Application of appropriate technology in the cultivation process can help improve labor efficiency, reduce production costs, and increase yields.

Improving the Quality of Seeds

The use of superior and high-quality seeds can increase the production and productivity of red chili plants. Farmers can access the superior seed supply program from the government or related institutions.

Conclusion

This study shows that the use of production inputs in red chili farming in Beganding Villages is not efficient. Increasing the efficiency of the use of production input can be done through various strategies, such as the application of appropriate technology, the use of organic fertilizer, and integrated pest control. This is important to increase the productivity and income of red chili farmers in Beganding Village and encourage the sustainability of farming.
