Introduction

Stress is a common psychiatric disorder that affects many individuals, including students, especially those who have recently entered the academic world. The transition from high school to university can be a challenging experience, and first year students of the Faculty of Nursing, University of North Sumatra, are no exception. This study aims to investigate the stress levels among first year students of the Faculty of Nursing, University of North Sumatra, with a focus on their demographic characteristics.

Methodology

This study employed a descriptive design, involving 170 first year students of the Faculty of Nursing, University of North Sumatra, using a total sampling technique. Data was collected between September 2016 and July 2017, using a questionnaire that contained questions about demographic data and stress levels. The questionnaire was designed to gather information about the students' demographic characteristics, such as age, gender, and academic background, as well as their stress levels.

Results

The results of this study showed that the majority of students experienced moderate stress levels. Specifically, 8 students (4.7%) experienced mild stress, 153 students (90.0%) experienced moderate stress, and 9 students (5.3%) experienced severe stress. Further analysis revealed that the majority of female respondents experienced moderate stress levels (90.1%). Additionally, students who chose the Faculty of Nursing, University of North Sumatra as their first choice also showed moderate stress levels (94.6%). Furthermore, students who lived in boarding experienced moderate stress levels (89.2%).

High levels of stress in first year students can be influenced by several factors. Firstly, the transition from high school to university brings new challenges, such as heavier academic burdens and the need to adapt to a new environment. Secondly, social factors also play a significant role, where students who live far from home may feel the loss of support from their family, which can add to emotional pressure.

The results of this study highlight the need for the university to provide appropriate support for new students, especially in helping them adapt to the new environment. Guidance, counseling, and self-development programs can be a solution to reduce stress levels. In addition, understanding of stress management also needs to be taught, so that students can face various challenges that arise during lectures.

This research not only provides an overview of the level of stress among first year students but also identifies several causes that might trigger stress. With this understanding, students are expected to be able to learn to manage stress better and make it a motivation to achieve their academic goals. The university can use this information to develop targeted support programs for new students, which can help to reduce stress levels and improve academic performance.

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the sample size was relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. Secondly, the study only focused on first year students of the Faculty of Nursing, University of North Sumatra, which may not be representative of students from other faculties or universities. Finally, the study only used a questionnaire to collect data, which may not provide a comprehensive understanding of the stress levels among students.
