The Effect of Growth of Third Party Funds on Profitability in Sharia Commercial Banks in Indonesia Period 2011-2016

Introduction

The growth of third-party funds is a crucial aspect of the profitability of Sharia commercial banks in Indonesia. The increasing demand for Islamic banking services has led to a significant growth in the number of Sharia commercial banks in the country. However, the growth of third-party funds has a direct impact on the profitability of these banks. This study aims to determine and analyze the effect of wadiah current account growth, mudharabah savings, wadiah savings, and mudharabah deposits on profitability (return on assets) at Sharia commercial banks in Indonesia during the period 2011 to 2016.

Background of the Study

The growth of Islamic banking in Indonesia has been rapid in recent years. The number of Sharia commercial banks in the country has increased significantly, and the demand for Islamic banking services has also increased. However, the growth of third-party funds has a direct impact on the profitability of these banks. The growth of third-party funds is essential for the sustainability of Sharia commercial banks, as it provides them with the necessary funds to operate and expand their services.

Methodology

This study is associative and involves seven Islamic banks that are registered with Bank Indonesia. The analysis method used consists of descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression panel data. The data used in this study is obtained from the annual reports of the seven Islamic banks that are registered with Bank Indonesia.

Results

The results of this study showed that overall, the growth of wadiah demand deposits, mudharabah savings, wadiah savings, and mudharabah deposits had a positive and significant influence on profitability (return on assets) at the Indonesian Sharia Commercial Bank. However, when viewed more deeply, there are variations on the influence of each component. Wadiah current account growth turned out to have a negative and insignificant impact on profitability, while the growth of mudharabah savings and wadiah savings had a positive but also not significant influence. Conversely, the growth of mudharabah deposits shows significant positive results on bank profitability.

Analysis and Implications

This finding indicates that to increase Return on Assets (ROA), Islamic banks should focus on raising funds on mudharabah deposits. Considering that the growth of mudharabah deposits contributes significantly to profitability, bank management needs to design the right strategy to attract more customers and increase the stability of this fund. In addition, banks should evaluate policies and strategies related to wadiah and savings current accounts, because the growth of this component does not have the expected impact. It may be necessary to make changes in the products offered or in the way of marketing to better meet customer needs.

The Importance of Diversification of Funds

This study also highlighted the importance of diversification of funds in improving the profitability of Islamic banks. With diversification, banks can minimize risks that may arise from dependence on one type of funds. Implementation of more aggressive fundraising strategies in the form of mudharabah deposits can also be an intelligent step in increasing the competitiveness of Islamic banks in the market.

Conclusion

Overall, this research emphasizes the importance of special attention to the growth of mudharabah deposits in order to increase the profitability of Islamic banks. It is hoped that these findings can be a reference for banks in formulating more effective strategies to achieve maximum profitability goals. Thus, Islamic banks can contribute greater to the development of Islamic economics in Indonesia.

Aggressive fundraising strategies: Banks should implement more aggressive fundraising strategies in the form of mudharabah deposits to increase competitiveness.
