Increasing the Accuracy of the Diagnosis of Acute Leukemia with Fine-Tuning Resnet-18

Early detection of acute leukemia is crucial to increase the chances of patient recovery. This study investigated the use of the Deep Learning Resnet-18 model, which was reintegrated to diagnose acute leukemia accurately from blood smear images. Although Deep Learning has advanced rapidly in the introduction of images, the use of Resnet-18 for the diagnosis of acute leukemia from blood smear images is still limited.

The study proposes fine-tuning Resnet-18 to increase the accuracy of acute leukemia diagnosis. Two datasets of blood smear pictures were collected, namely Dataset Hospital from Adam Malik Hospital Medan and Allidb1 from Università Degli Study in Milano Statere. After preprocessing images, the model was trained using fine-tuning techniques in Resnet-18 architecture. The evaluation results show high accuracy, with 99.12% accuracy in the validation dataset and 99.12% in the test dataset.

Additional evaluation metrics, including precision, recall, F1-Score, and Aucroc, also show excellent performance in classifying blood smear images as acute or normal leukemia. Comparative analysis with three other architectures, namely Resnet-18 without fine-tuning, VGG-16, and Mobilenet V2, show that fine-tuning Resnet-18 produces superior performance in terms of accuracy and stability.
