Introduction

In the context of health services, hospital performance is one of the most critical indicators in determining the quality of services provided to the community. Effective hospital performance is essential for delivering high-quality healthcare services, improving patient outcomes, and enhancing the overall reputation of the hospital. In North Sumatra Province, hospital performance is a significant concern, given the growing demand for healthcare services and the need to improve the quality of care. Therefore, it is essential to analyze the factors that influence hospital performance in this region.

Background

Hospital performance is influenced by various factors, including benchmarks, hospital information systems, continuous improvement, leadership, and management processes. Benchmarks refer to the standards or targets that hospitals aim to achieve in terms of quality, safety, and efficiency. Hospital information systems play a crucial role in managing patient data, streamlining clinical workflows, and improving decision-making. Continuous improvement is a key aspect of quality management, involving ongoing efforts to identify and address areas for improvement. Leadership is essential for driving change, motivating staff, and ensuring that hospital goals are aligned with the needs of the community. Management processes refer to the systems and procedures in place for managing hospital operations, including resource allocation, budgeting, and performance evaluation.

Research Methods and Theory Used

This study uses a quantitative approach with a hypothetical-deductive design. The total population in this study consisted of 12,227 people from 34 general hospitals in North Sumatra Province. A non-probability convenience sampling technique was used to select 582 respondents. Data analysis was conducted using a series of tests, including exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and structural equation modeling (SEM) using AMOS.

The theories underlying this research include agency theory, which explains the relationship between hospital management and performance; transaction cost theory, which highlights the importance of efficient management processes; Deming theory, which emphasizes the need for continuous improvement and quality management; and Crosby theory, which focuses on the role of leadership in driving change and improvement.

Results and Discussion

The results of this study revealed a significant relationship between the five independent variables and hospital performance. However, the analysis showed that three variables - measuring, continuous improvement, and leadership - have a negative influence on hospital performance. On the other hand, two other variables - hospital information systems and management processes - show positive effects.

The existence of moderation variables, namely strategic planning, plays an important role in this relationship. Strategic planning has a significant influence on the relationship between benchmarks, continuous improvement, and management process with hospital performance. However, strategic planning does not show a significant effect on the relationship between benchmarks and leadership on hospital performance.

Conclusion and Implications

These findings highlight the importance of effective information systems and good management processes in improving hospital performance. Meanwhile, benchmarks and leadership require more attention so as not to have a negative impact. Therefore, hospitals in North Sumatra Province need to implement Total Quality Management (TQM) and strengthen the strategic planning system to improve performance and services to the community.

By understanding the factors that influence hospital performance, management can formulate more appropriate steps to achieve better health services. This study provides valuable insights for decision makers in the health sector, especially in areas that have similar challenges.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Implement Total Quality Management (TQM): Hospitals in North Sumatra Province should adopt TQM principles to improve quality, safety, and efficiency.
Strengthen strategic planning: Hospitals should develop and implement effective strategic plans to drive change and improvement.
Improve hospital information systems: Hospitals should invest in modern hospital information systems to manage patient data, streamline clinical workflows, and improve decision-making.
Enhance leadership: Hospitals should develop and implement effective leadership development programs to improve leadership skills and drive change.
Monitor and evaluate performance: Hospitals should establish regular monitoring and evaluation systems to track performance and identify areas for improvement.

Limitations and Future Research Directions

This study has several limitations, including the use of a non-probability sampling technique and the reliance on self-reported data. Future research should aim to address these limitations by using more robust sampling techniques and collecting data from multiple sources.
