Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic has become a significant challenge for people around the world, including in Indonesia. Sidiangkat Village, Sidikalang District, Dairi, is one of the areas that is the focus of this research to analyze the readiness of the community in dealing with the pandemic. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive study approach, which aims to explore public knowledge about COVID-19 and their response during the period July 2020 to July 2021.

Background of the Study

The COVID-19 pandemic has spread rapidly around the world, causing significant health, economic, and social impacts. Indonesia, as a country with a large population, has also been affected by the pandemic. The government has taken various measures to control the spread of the virus, including implementing health protocols, conducting mass testing, and providing vaccination. However, the effectiveness of these measures depends on the level of community readiness and awareness.

Methodology

This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive study approach. The data were collected through in-depth interviews with community members, village officials, and medical personnel. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify the themes and sub-themes related to community readiness in facing the pandemic.

Results

The results of this study showed that public awareness of the pandemic gradually increased from unaware to starting to prepare themselves. In the dimensions of public knowledge, people began to understand that COVID-19 is a serious problem that needs to be addressed. This awareness is accompanied by their efforts to comply with the health protocol launched by the government. The community shows support for government steps with compliance with existing rules.

The resource dimension is also an important aspect of community readiness. The results of this study showed that there are major challenges due to lack of experience and references in dealing with COVID-19. This makes medical services in Sidikalang General Hospital less optimal.

Discussion

The results of this study showed that community readiness in Sidiangkat Village shows positive progress, but there are still many things that need to be improved. Support from the government and increasing community capacity in dealing with the pandemic will be the main key to facing future health challenges. The success of handling pandemics is not only the responsibility of the government, but also the active involvement of the community.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of community readiness in facing the COVID-19 pandemic. The results of this study showed that public awareness of the pandemic gradually increased from unaware to starting to prepare themselves. The community shows support for government steps with compliance with existing rules. However, there are still many things that need to be improved, including the role of the village government and the resource dimension.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Increase public awareness: The government should continue to increase public awareness of the pandemic through various channels, including social media, television, and radio.
Improve community capacity: The government should provide training and counseling to community members and medical personnel to increase their knowledge and skills in dealing with the pandemic.
Strengthen leadership and governance: The village government and the regional government should work together to improve their response to the pandemic.
Develop local wisdom: The government should develop local wisdom, such as herbal plants, to support public health.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations, including:

Small sample size: The sample size of this study is relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the results.
Qualitative method: The study uses a qualitative method, which may not provide a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon.
