Effect of Competency and Intrinsic Motivation of SAR Employees in Providing First Aid Training for Disaster Victims on SAR Employee Performance at the Medan SAR Office

Introduction

North Sumatra is known as one of the most vulnerable areas to disasters, with a disaster vulnerability index of 148, ranked seventh in Indonesia. In dealing with the threat of this disaster, the role of the community becomes crucial to minimize losses and the number of victims. One step that can be taken is to improve the ability and skills of the community in dealing with disasters. Therefore, the National SAR Agency assigned SAR employees with rescue positions to provide training in first aid to prospective disaster victims. This study aims to analyze the effect of competency and intrinsic motivation of SAR employees in providing first aid training on their performance at the Medan SAR Office.

Background of the Study

The role of SAR employees in providing first aid training for disaster victims is crucial in minimizing losses and the number of victims. However, the effectiveness of their performance depends on several factors, including their competency and intrinsic motivation. Competency refers to the ability of SAR employees to provide first aid training, while intrinsic motivation refers to their internal drive to perform their tasks. The relationship between competency, intrinsic motivation, and performance has been studied in various fields, but there is a lack of research on the specific context of SAR employees in North Sumatra.

Methodology

This study uses the Explanatory Research approach, which aims to explain the relationship between variables through hypothesis testing. The population of this study consisted of 123 employees at the Medan SAR Office, with 32 of them as samples. Data was collected through interviews using questionnaires, and the results were analyzed using a linear regression test.

Results

The results showed that the competence of SAR employees in providing first aid training for disaster victims had a significant influence on their performance, with a value of p = 0.014 (p <0.05). In addition, the intrinsic motivation of SAR employees in carrying out disaster mitigation tasks also shows a significant effect, with a value of P = 0.043 (p <0.05). This finding shows that both the competencies owned by SAR employees and their intrinsic motivation are very influential on the quality of performance in first aid training.

Discussion

The results of this study have several implications for the management of the Medan SAR Office. Firstly, it is essential to improve first aid training for SAR employees. Training must not only be given at the beginning of the appointment of employees, but must be done continuously every six months. Thus, SAR employees will always have the latest abilities and in-depth understanding of the first aid procedure.

Secondly, it is crucial to assign employees in accordance with their educational background. Referring to the results of this study, it would be very useful if the Medan SAR Office recruited new employees with educational backgrounds in the health sector, such as doctors and nurses, to strengthen competence in providing first aid training for disaster victims.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study found that the competency and intrinsic motivation of SAR employees in providing first aid training for disaster victims have a significant influence on their performance. The management of the Medan SAR Office is expected to improve first aid training for SAR employees and assign employees in accordance with their educational background. With these steps, it is expected that the performance of SAR employees in the Medan SAR Office can increase and in turn, trained people will be better prepared and have better capabilities in dealing with disasters, so as to reduce the level of loss and the number of victims when the disaster occurs.

Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Improve first aid training: The management of the Medan SAR Office should improve first aid training for SAR employees. Training must not only be given at the beginning of the appointment of employees, but must be done continuously every six months.
Assign employees in accordance with educational background: The Medan SAR Office should assign employees in accordance with their educational background. Referring to the results of this study, it would be very useful if the Medan SAR Office recruited new employees with educational backgrounds in the health sector, such as doctors and nurses, to strengthen competence in providing first aid training for disaster victims.
