Analysis of Labor Needs Between Expectations and Reality in Tambunan Garden A

Introduction

The Tambunan A garden, located in an area known for its promising potential for oil palm cultivation, has not fully optimized its production facilities and labor quality and quantity. This study aims to investigate the condition of the workforce in Tambunan A garden by involving 15 informants, including the Management Coordinator, Head of Division, and Employees. A comparison was made with the adjacent Tambunan B Garden, also examined with the same number of informants.

Research Methodology

This study employed a qualitative research approach, involving in-depth interviews with 15 informants from Tambunan A garden and 15 informants from Tambunan B garden. The informants consisted of the Management Coordinator, Head of Division, and Employees. The data collected was analyzed to identify the challenges faced by the workforce in Tambunan A garden.

Research Findings

Labor Needs and Balance

The Tambunan A garden employs two categories of employees: 69 monthly permanent employees and 30 wholesale workers for maintenance. Interestingly, the number of permanent employees exceeded the ideal need of 30 people, which is set at 0.15 people per hectare. This means that the garden should only require 39 employees. Meanwhile, for wholesale workers, there are excess 3 people from the ideal number that should be 26 people. This imbalance in labor needs can lead to inefficiencies and decreased productivity.

Employee Education Level

The education level of employees in the garden is still relatively low. Of the total 69 permanent employees, only 10 people graduated from college and 21 people with high school education. Meanwhile, there are 4 employees who don't even complete basic education. This condition reflects the challenges in managing human resources that affect work productivity. The low education level of employees can lead to a lack of skills and knowledge, making it difficult for them to perform their duties effectively.

Salary and Wage Problems

The low salary of employees is caused by overstaffing and low oil palm production. Monthly permanent employees receive a fixed salary, while the wholesale worker gets paid based on maintenance results. This creates dissatisfaction among employees, which in turn can affect motivation and productivity. The low salary can lead to a high turnover rate, as employees may seek better-paying jobs elsewhere.

Low Palm Oil Production

Palm oil production in Tambunan A garden is still far below the existing potential. This is caused by inadequate plant maintenance treatment, where fertilization is only carried out 1 kg per principal, even though it should be between 1.5 kg to 2 kg per principal. This revenue shows the need for further evaluation of the practice of cultivation applied. The low palm oil production can lead to a decrease in revenue and profitability for the garden.

Garden Security System

Although there is a security system in the form of patrols, theft by the surrounding community is still a serious problem. This shows that a more effective approach in maintaining garden safety needs to be applied, so that the potential loss can be minimized. The lack of effective security measures can lead to a decrease in productivity and revenue.

Employee Discipline

Low employee discipline, which is characterized by the habit of rarely coming to work and only filling attendance, is an additional challenge. Although working hours are set from 08.00 to 15.00 WIB, the lack of firmness from the manager in upholding the rules of contributing to this problem. The low employee discipline can lead to a decrease in productivity and motivation.

Conclusion

From the analysis above, it appears that the Tambunan A garden faces a number of challenges related to the needs of the workforce, both in terms of quantity and quality. To optimize the potential of existing palm cultivation, strategic steps are needed that include improvement in managing human resources, improving education and training for employees, and evaluating more effective cultivation practices. Thus, it is expected that Tambunan A garden can achieve better and sustainable productivity in the future.
