Introduction

In today's digital age, libraries play a vital role in providing access to information and promoting lifelong learning. However, the effectiveness of libraries in meeting the needs of their users depends on various factors, including the quality of their services, the availability of resources, and the communication skills of their librarians. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of persuasive communication carried out by librarians at Medan State University (Unimed) and the impact of marketing communication on user satisfaction. By analyzing the correlation between these two forms of communication and user satisfaction, this study seeks to provide insights into the importance of effective communication in libraries and to identify areas for improvement.

Theoretical Background

Effective communication is a crucial aspect of any organization, including libraries. Persuasive communication, in particular, is a key strategy used by librarians to engage with users, promote library services, and build relationships. The Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) of persuasion, developed by Richard Petty and John Cacioppo, suggests that persuasive communication is more effective when it is tailored to the needs and interests of the target audience (Petty & Cacioppo, 1986). Marketing communication, on the other hand, is a broader concept that encompasses all forms of communication used to promote a product, service, or idea. In the context of libraries, marketing communication can take many forms, including social media campaigns, promotional materials, and events.

Research Methodology

This study employed a correlational design to examine the relationship between persuasive communication, marketing communication, and user satisfaction. The population consisted of all registered Unimed library members, with a total of 19,791 people. A sample of 392 respondents was selected using purposive sampling techniques, with a focus on individuals who were considered to have relevant information and experiences about the use of the library. Data were collected using a survey questionnaire that assessed the respondents' perceptions of persuasive communication, marketing communication, and user satisfaction.

Research Results

The results of the study showed that both persuasive communication and marketing communication had a significant positive impact on user satisfaction. Persuasive communication, in particular, was found to have a positive and significant influence on user satisfaction, with a value of 5,309 units. Marketing communication, on the other hand, showed a significant positive impact on user satisfaction, with a value of 7,796 units. These findings suggest that marketing communication is a more dominant factor than persuasive communication in influencing the level of user satisfaction.

Analysis and Discussion

The results of the study highlight the importance of effective communication in libraries. Persuasive communication, in particular, can play a crucial role in building good relationships with users, helping them find the information they need, and creating an environment that supports the learning process. Marketing communication, on the other hand, can increase user awareness and interest in library services by promoting library activities, new services, and available resources. However, the results also noted that 67.3% of user satisfaction was influenced by other factors not covered in this study, indicating that there are still many other variables that can affect user experience in the library.

Conclusion

Overall, this research underlines the importance of persuasive and marketing communication in increasing the satisfaction of users of the Medan State University library. The implementation of effective communication strategies can improve user experience and maximize the role of the library as a center of information and education. Therefore, there needs to be an ongoing effort in improving librarian communication skills and designing innovative marketing strategies that are in accordance with user needs. This research is expected to contribute to the development of library services and open up opportunities for further research that can explore other factors that affect the satisfaction of library users.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Improve librarian communication skills: Librarians should receive training and development opportunities to enhance their communication skills, including persuasive communication and marketing communication.
Design innovative marketing strategies: Libraries should develop innovative marketing strategies that are tailored to the needs and interests of their users, including social media campaigns, promotional materials, and events.

This study has several limitations that should be acknowledged. Firstly, the sample size was relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. Secondly, the study only examined the relationship between persuasive communication, marketing communication, and user satisfaction, and did not explore other factors that may influence user experience in the library. Finally, the study was conducted in a specific context, and the findings may not be applicable to other libraries or settings.
