Introduction

A healthy environment and sustainable fish resources are very important for life, especially for traditional fishing communities in the city of Semarang. Fish resources, although abundant, must still be managed wisely so as not to be damaged. Increasing the population and the need for fish resources has the potential to damage environmental sustainability, which in turn can threaten the welfare of future generations. To overcome this problem, the government has implemented various regulations to protect fish resources, such as the regulation of fishing gear, the size of the net, the prohibition on the use of explosives, and tighter law enforcement. However, this preservation practice is still not fully accepted and carried out by fishermen.

Research Background

The city of Semarang is one of the major fishing centers in Indonesia, with a large number of traditional fishermen relying on the sea for their livelihood. However, the increasing demand for fish resources and the lack of effective management have led to the degradation of marine ecosystems and the depletion of fish stocks. The government has implemented various regulations to protect fish resources, but the effectiveness of these regulations is still questionable. This study aims to investigate the concept of preservation of the environmental ability in traditional fishermen in Kotamadia Semarang and to identify the challenges and opportunities for sustainable fishing practices.

Methodology

This research uses an analytical descriptive approach, by collecting data through literature studies, interviews, and questionnaires from 70 respondents. The area studied included Mangunharjo Village, Bandarharjo Village, and Tanjung Mas Village. The data collected includes information on the fishing system used by fishermen, supervision and law enforcement of the implementation of the preservation of fish resources, the condition of the sustainability of the fish resources itself, the implementation of the concept of preserving the ability of the environment, and the concern of fishermen towards sea pollution.

Results

The results of this study indicate that the fishing system that is commonly used, namely nets, does not fully support the concept of environmental preservation. In addition, supervision that is less tight and weak law enforcement makes the implementation of regulations ineffective. The condition of the sustainability of fish resources in the area is also fairly unfavorable, while the implementation of the concept of preservation is still far from what is expected. However, there are positive indications of fishermen's concern for marine pollution, showing that awareness of the importance of protecting the environment has begun to grow among them.

Discussion

Analysis of the results of this study shows that despite the efforts of the government and awareness of fishermen on pollution, there are still many challenges that must be faced. One of them is the lack of education and socialization about the importance of environmental preservation. Education and capacity building of fishermen regarding sustainable fishing practices needs to be improved so that they can understand and implement the concept of preservation well.

Furthermore, collaboration between the government, non-governmental organizations, and fishing communities is needed to create programs that support the preservation of fish resources. This includes the provision of environmentally friendly capture technology and counseling on ways to maintain sea cleanliness.

Conclusion

In a broader context, efforts to preserve the ability of the environment not only have an impact on traditional fishermen, but also in marine ecosystems and society as a whole. By maintaining the sustainability of fish resources, we not only protect the livelihoods of fishermen but also ensure that future generations can enjoy the existing marine wealth. Therefore, it is important to continue to monitor and evaluate existing policies, as well as providing support to fishermen to transition towards more sustainable capture practices.

By implementing these recommendations, we can improve the sustainability of fish resources and protect the livelihoods of fishermen, as well as ensure that future generations can enjoy the existing marine wealth.
