Introduction

Villa Johor Housing, located in the Medan Johor District, has been experiencing severe problems with inundation floods for over a decade. Despite its relatively small area of 7,836 m², the housing complex has been plagued by frequent flooding, with puddles reaching heights of 40-100 cm and low tide lasting up to 6 hours. This situation has raised concerns about the existing drainage system and its ability to handle the area's rainfall. In this study, we aim to review the drainage system and provide recommendations to overcome the problem of inundation floods in Villa Johor Housing.

Background

Villa Johor Housing has been established for 10 years, but despite its age, the problem of floods has persisted. The area's rainfall is a significant concern, with data from the Polonia Station over the past 20 years showing a high frequency of extreme rainfall events. To better understand the rainfall pattern, we analyzed the data using four frequency distribution methods: normal distribution, log-normal distribution, Pearson II log distribution, and Gumbel distribution. Our analysis revealed that the Gumbel distribution provides the most extreme results, indicating a high likelihood of extreme rainfall events in the area.

Methodology

To estimate the water discharge that might occur in the area, we considered the re-period of rainfall for 2 years and 5 years. We used the results of the analysis to calculate the plan discharge, which includes the dirty water discharge and cumulative discharge. This data was then processed for hydraulic analysis to determine the optimal drainage channel dimensions. Our calculation results showed a significant difference between the calculated channel dimensions and the existing dimensions, indicating a need for improvement.

The capacity of these infiltration wells varies, with a 100/160 house type accommodating 69 liters, type 48/90 holding 14 liters, and type 64/105 accommodating 16 liters.
