The Effect of Leadership Style, Internal Control System, Law Enforcement, and Organizational Culture on Accounting Fraud: A Study of Bank Employees Persero XXX in Medan City

Introduction

Accounting fraud is a significant concern for financial institutions, as it can lead to financial losses, damage to reputation, and erosion of trust among stakeholders. In recent years, several high-profile cases of accounting fraud have been reported in Indonesia, highlighting the need for effective measures to prevent and detect such incidents. This study aims to investigate the effect of leadership style, internal control system, law enforcement, and organizational culture on the tendency of accounting fraud among employees of PT Bank BNI Medan Branch.

Background

PT Bank BNI Medan Branch is one of the largest banks in Indonesia, with a significant presence in the city of Medan. The bank has a reputation for being a reliable and trustworthy financial institution, but like any other organization, it is not immune to the risk of accounting fraud. In recent years, the bank has experienced several cases of accounting fraud, which have resulted in significant financial losses and damage to its reputation.

Methodology

This study involved 45 employees of PT Bank BNI Medan Branch as respondents, who were selected through a random sampling method. Data were collected through a questionnaire, which was designed to measure the respondents' perceptions of leadership style, internal control system, law enforcement, and organizational culture. The questionnaire consisted of 20 items, which were scored on a 5-point Likert scale.

The data were analyzed using multiple linear regression, which was used to examine the relationship between the independent variables (leadership style, internal control system, law enforcement, and organizational culture) and the dependent variable (accounting fraud). The results of the analysis were used to identify the factors that influence accounting fraud among employees of PT Bank BNI Medan Branch.

Results

The results of the study showed that the four independent variables (leadership style, internal control system, law enforcement, and organizational culture) together had a significant influence on accounting fraud. Further analysis through partial tests showed that the leadership style, internal control system, and law enforcement had a negative and significant influence on accounting fraud. This means that the better the leadership style, the more effective the internal control system, and the stronger law enforcement, the lower the tendency of accounting fraud will be.

However, the organizational culture variable showed a negative influence on accounting fraud, but the influence was not significant. This means that although good organizational culture can suppress accounting fraud, this factor is not the main determinant in reducing this trend.

Discussion

The results of this study have important implications for PT Bank BNI Medan Branch. The findings suggest that the bank needs to improve its leadership quality by building a leadership culture that is integrity, transparent, and accountable. This can be done through leadership training that focuses on ethics, organizational values, and prevention of fraud.

The bank also needs to strengthen its internal control system by performing periodic reviews and evaluation to ensure its effectiveness in preventing and detecting fraud. Additionally, the bank should create an anti-disadvantage organizational culture by building an organizational culture that emphasizes integrity, honesty, and business ethics. This can be achieved through educational programs, the delivery of the company's code of ethics periodically, and giving appreciation to employees who show honest and responsible behavior.

Furthermore, the bank should encourage law enforcement against fraud by strengthening cooperation with the authorities to crack down on every case of accounting fraud detected.

Conclusion

This study shows that accounting fraud is not only influenced by organizational internal factors, such as leadership styles and internal control systems, but also influenced by external factors such as law enforcement. By understanding the factors that influence accounting fraud, it is hoped that PT Bank BNI Medan Branch can take strategic steps to prevent and reduce the risk of future accounting fraud.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Improving leadership quality: PT Bank BNI Medan Branch should improve its leadership quality by building a leadership culture that is integrity, transparent, and accountable.
Strengthening the internal control system: The bank should strengthen its internal control system by performing periodic reviews and evaluation to ensure its effectiveness in preventing and detecting fraud.
Creating an anti-disadvantage organizational culture: The bank should create an anti-disadvantage organizational culture by building an organizational culture that emphasizes integrity, honesty, and business ethics.
Encouraging law enforcement against fraud: The bank should encourage law enforcement against fraud by strengthening cooperation with the authorities to crack down on every case of accounting fraud detected.

Limitations

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the study was conducted among employees of PT Bank BNI Medan Branch, which may not be representative of other banks or financial institutions. Secondly, the study relied on self-reported data, which may be subject to biases and errors. Finally, the study only examined the effect of leadership style, internal control system, law enforcement, and organizational culture on accounting fraud, and did not examine other potential factors that may influence accounting fraud.

Future Research Directions

Future research should aim to replicate this study in other banks or financial institutions to examine the generalizability of the findings.
