Introduction

In the healthcare industry, patient perception plays a crucial role in determining the success of a hospital. The Sri Pamela Tebing Tinggi Hospital, owned by PTP Nusantara III, serves both the company and the general public. In 2004, the hospital recorded 2,276 general patient visits, while the company patients reached 24,166. The hospital management has set a target of increasing general patient visits by 20% in 2008. To achieve this target, understanding the effect of patient perceptions on visits to outpatient units is essential.

Methodology

This study uses a descriptive survey method with a cross-sectional study design. Data was collected through a questionnaire distributed to 100 respondents, namely patients who had visited the Sri Pamela Tebing Tinggi Hospital outpatient unit since 2004. The questionnaire examined the perception of patients related to facilities, human resources (HR), applicable rates, and the service process.

Results

The results of linear regression analysis show that there is a significant influence between the patient's perception of visits to the outpatient unit. Facility variables, HR, and service processes have positive signs, which means improving quality in these three aspects will have a positive impact on increasing the frequency of patient visits. Conversely, the tariff variable has a negative sign, indicating that a higher rate will have a negative impact on the number of patient visits.

Furthermore, the analysis shows that the HR variable has the greatest influence on patient perception. The coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.856 shows that the independent variable can explain 85.60% of the dependent variable, while the remaining 14.40% is explained by other independent variables.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that improving the quality of facilities, human resources, and service processes, as well as maintaining competitive tariffs, can increase the positive perception of patients. This positive perception will encourage patients to visit the hospital more often. Increasing the frequency of patient visits will certainly have a positive impact on the hospital, in addition to increasing income, it will also help the hospital to achieve the specified profitability targets.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, several recommendations can be submitted to increase patient visits to Sri Pamela Tebing Tinggi Hospital:

Improving the quality of facilities: Updating and improving the quality of available facilities, such as waiting rooms, inpatient rooms, and medical equipment.
Improving the quality of human resources: Providing training and development to medical and non-medical personnel to improve their competence and professionalism.
Improving the quality of the service process: Improving and facilitating the service process, such as registration, inspection, and payment.
Maintaining competitive tariffs: Considering competitive tariffs with other hospitals in the same region, while still considering the quality of services provided.

Conclusion

By implementing the right strategy based on the results of this study, Sri Pamela Tebing Tinggi Hospital can increase the positive perception of patients and achieve the target of increasing patient visits, which in turn will have a positive impact on the success of the hospital as a profit center.

Limitations

This study has several limitations, including the small sample size and the use of a cross-sectional study design. Future studies can use a larger sample size and a longitudinal study design to provide more accurate results.
