Relationship of Safety Riding Characteristics and Knowledge with Traffic Compliance with Motorcycle Pedicab Drivers in Medan Selayang District in 2022

Introduction

Transportation is a fundamental human need that enables individuals to achieve their destinations. In Indonesia, the development of transportation has been remarkable, with various modes of transportation available, including bicycles, rickshaws, cars, aircraft, ships, and more. The growth of transportation continues to this day, with safety being a crucial aspect of driving. This study aims to explore the relationship between safety riding characteristics and knowledge with traffic compliance among motorized pedicab drivers in Medan Selayang District in 2022.

Background

Motorized pedicab drivers play a vital role in providing transportation services in urban areas. However, their driving habits and knowledge of safety riding can significantly impact road safety. In Indonesia, the number of road accidents and fatalities is alarming, with many cases involving motorized pedicab drivers. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the relationship between safety riding characteristics and knowledge with traffic compliance among motorized pedicab drivers.

Methodology

This study employed a quantitative research design with a cross-sectional study approach to explore the relationship between safety riding characteristics and knowledge with traffic compliance among motorized pedicab drivers in Medan Selayang District in 2022. The population consisted of 35 motorized pedicab drivers, with a distribution of 5 people in Beringin, 5 people in Asam Kumbang, 5 people in Tanjung Sari, 8 people in Padang Bulan Seayang I, 7 people in Padang Bulan Selayang II, and 5 people in Sempakata. The sampling method used was accidental sampling.

Results

The results of the analysis showed that most motorized pedicab drivers in Medan Selayang District in 2022 lacked knowledge about safety riding, which includes obeying traffic rules. The analysis also revealed that there was no significant relationship between driver characteristics and traffic obedience. However, knowledge about safety riding had a significant relationship with traffic obedience, with a value of P = 0.03. This indicates that good knowledge of safety riding can encourage drivers to be more obedient to traffic rules.

Discussion

Traffic obedience is a critical aspect of creating security and comfort on the highway. Motorized pedicab drivers, who often operate in dense areas, have significant responsibilities in maintaining their own safety and other road users. Knowledge of safety riding is essential because it can influence safe driving decisions. Characteristic factors such as age, driving experience, and education can affect the driver's understanding of driving safety. However, in this study, no significant relationship was found between the driver's characteristics and traffic obedience.

On the other hand, knowledge of safety riding, which has a significant influence on traffic obedience, indicates the need to increase education and socialization about driving safety to drivers. Training programs aimed at increasing awareness and knowledge about safety riding can be a solution to reduce traffic violations and improve road safety. In other words, this research provides a clear picture of the importance of safety riding knowledge in increasing traffic obedience among motorized pedicab drivers.

Conclusion

This study highlights the significance of safety riding knowledge in improving traffic compliance among motorized pedicab drivers. The results obtained from this study can serve as a basis for policymakers to design programs that are more effective in improving driving safety in Indonesia. Cooperation is needed between the government, educational institutions, and community organizations to disseminate information and education related to safety riding.
