Low birth weight (LBW) is a significant public health concern worldwide, including in Indonesia. In 2017, the General Hospital of Adam Malik Hajj Medan recorded 120 events of newborns with low birth weight (BBLR) of a total of 467 live births, which is equivalent to 25.70%. Babies who experience LBW are defined as babies who weigh less than 2,500 grams at birth. This study aims to analyze the factors that contribute to LBW events by comparing two analytical methods, namely logistics regression and discriminant analysis.

Research Methodology

In this study, data was collected from mothers who gave birth at the Adam Malik Hospital Medan. The analysis method used is logistics regression and discriminant analysis. Logistics regression functions to evaluate the relationship between independent and dependent variables, where the dependent variable is nonmetric. Meanwhile, discriminant analysis is used to classify independent variables based on dependent variable groups. The study took place from April to August 2018, with a sample consisting of 100 mothers who gave birth to a baby living in the hospital.

The results of the analysis show that in logistics regression, a significant variable is the frequency of antenatal care (ANC) and gestational age, with an odds ratio (OR) 2,347 and 2,737 respectively. On the other hand, in discriminant analysis, the value obtained is Wilk's Lambda ± F, with an ANC frequency shows the most significant value at 0.862 ± 15,719, followed by the maternal age variable and the distance of pregnancy. From the two methods used, the gestational age becomes a variable with the highest OR value in logistics regression, while the ANC frequency becomes the variable with the smallest and largest Lambda Wilk's value in discriminant analysis.
