Introduction

The Hamparan Perak District, located in Deli Serdang Regency, has been identified as a region with great potential for the development of goats and sheep. This study aims to investigate the livestock resources, area, and carrying capacity for goats and sheep in the region, and to formulate an effective alternative strategy for their development. The study was conducted in the period October to November 2021, using stratified and purposive sampling methods in several villages in Hamparan Perak District.

The Hamparan Perak District is a region with a rich agricultural heritage, and livestock farming is an important sector of the local economy. The study also included villages with lower populations, such as Tandam Hilir Dua, Flat City, Klambir, Sungai Baharu, and Paluh Kurau. The data collection methods used in the study included interviews with respondents, descriptive analysis, location quotient (LQ), livestock density, feed concentration index, and carrying capacity of agricultural and plantation waste.

Results

The results of the study show that the Hamparan Perak District has a significant potential for the development of goats and sheep. The study identified nine base areas for goats and seven base areas for sheep, with a carrying capacity of 38,671.91 Animal Unit (ST) for goats and 36,747.61 ST for sheep. The study also found that the development of goats and sheep in the region will not only increase farmers' income but also has the potential to support food security and local economy.
