Growth Response and Production of Two Tomato Varieties (Solanum lycopersicum L.) at Various Oryzalin Concentrations

Introduction

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is one of the most widely cultivated and consumed vegetables worldwide. The growth and production of tomatoes are influenced by various factors, including the concentration of oryzalin, a herbicide commonly used in agriculture. Oryzalin is known to affect plant growth and development, but its impact on tomato production is not well understood. This study aims to investigate the growth response and production of two tomato varieties, Permata F1 and Tymoti F1, at various oryzalin concentrations.

Materials and Methods

The study was conducted at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, from June to October 2019. The experiment used a random design group (rack) with two factors: tomato varieties (Permata F1 and Tymoti F1) and oryzalin concentrations (0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 μm). Tomato seeds were soaked in oryzalin solution and then stirred using a shaker at 100 rpm. The observed parameters included plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks after planting (MST), number of fruits, fresh weight of tomatoes per plant, and fruit diameter.

Results

The results showed that tomato varieties, oryzalin concentrations, and interactions between the two had a significant influence on all observed parameters. The average plant height, number of leaves, and highest stem diameter were found in a combination of gem variety treatment (V1) with an oryzalin concentration of 0 μm (C0). Conversely, Tymoti (V2) varieties showed better performance in terms of the number of fruits, fresh weight of tomatoes per plant, and fruit diameter.

Analysis of Results

These results indicate that tomato varieties and oryzalin concentrations play an important role in determining the growth and results of tomato production. Permata varieties are proven to be superior in terms of vegetative growth, such as plant height and number of leaves. This may be caused by the genetic character of these varieties, which are more adaptive in certain growth conditions without chemical treatment. Conversely, Tymoti's varieties show better results in the aspect of production, such as the number of fruits and fresh weight. This shows that this variety is more responsive to the influence of oryzalin, which can stimulate fruit production.

Higher Oryzalin concentrations tend to inhibit vegetative growth but increase productivity in certain varieties. Therefore, it is essential for farmers and researchers to consider varieties in accordance with the conditions of growth and treatment applied. These findings are very valuable for tomato plant management strategies, as they can help in choosing optimal varieties and the right concentration of oryzalin to improve agricultural output.
