Introduction

In the complex dynamics of family relationships, interactions between parents and children play a crucial role in shaping the development and behavior of children. This study aims to investigate the relationship between verbal abuse of parents and aggressive behavior of school-age children in SD Negeri 060891 Medan, a public elementary school in Medan, Indonesia.

Verbal abuse, which includes insults, intimidation, and belittling comments, is a common form of negative interaction between parents and children. While it may seem trivial, verbal abuse can have a significant impact on a child's psychological development, leading to internalization of violence and aggression. Children who experience verbal abuse may develop aggressive behavior as a way to cope with their emotions and assert themselves in their environment.

Methodology

This study employed a descriptive correlation design, involving 75 respondents from SD Negeri 060891 Medan. The total sampling method was used to select participants, who were asked to complete a questionnaire to assess the extent of verbal abuse they experienced and their aggressive behavior. The data were analyzed using the Person Product Moment formula to determine the correlation between verbal abuse and aggressive behavior.

Results

The results of this study showed that the majority of children (68%) experienced verbal abuse in the mild category, while 66.7% of children showed signs of aggression. The analysis using the Person Product Moment formula produced a value (R) = 0.849 with a p-value of 0.00, indicating a significant relationship between verbal abuse experienced by children and aggressive behavior shown.
