Introduction to Bioplastics

Bioplastics are increasingly popular environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional plastic substitutes. The demand for bioplastics is growing rapidly due to their biodegradable nature, non-toxicity, and ability to reduce plastic waste. In this study, we aim to manufacture and characterize bioplastic based on a mixture of raw materials, namely stone banana leaf powder, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and Gum Arabic. The manufacturing process involves the MELT Intercalation method with variations in the composition of banana leaf powder, CMC, and Arabic gum.

Raw Materials and Manufacturing Process

The raw materials used in this study are stone banana leaf powder, CMC, and Gum Arabic. The stone banana leaf powder is processed using a steam explosion method to improve its quality and physical properties. The banana leaf powder, CMC, and Arabic gum are then sifted with a particle size of 100 mesh and mixed evenly for 30 minutes using the wet mixing method. The powder mixture is then printed using a glass mold and cooled until it hardens. Finally, the cold bioplastic sheets are compiled to level the surface using a 200 mesh wayer mesh under a pressure of 1 atm for 20 minutes at 60 ° C.

Characterization of Bioplastic

After manufacturing, the bioplastic samples undergo characterization to determine their physical and mechanical properties. The characterization includes density measurement, water absorption, biodegradity, functional group, tensile strength, broken extension, and modulus of elasticity. The results of the characterization show that the optimal composition of the powder of banana leaf, CMC, and Arabic gum is 55%: 15%: 30%WT with a density value of 1,601 x 10³ kg/m³, water absorption 10.247%, and biodegradity reaches 99.2% in 45 days. In addition, the mechanical properties of bioplastic showed a tensile strength of 35.71 MPa, a breakdown of 273.14%, and modulus of elasticity of 130.378 MPa.

Thermal Properties of Bioplastic

The thermal properties of bioplastic are also characterized, including the melting point. The results show that the bioplastic has a melting point of 302.45 ° C, which meets the SNI 7188.7: 2016 standard.

Conclusion and Future Directions

The results of this study indicate that bioplastic based on powder of banana leaf and CMC leaf which is reinforced with Arabic gum has good potential as packaging material and straws. With a high biodegradity nature and meets standards, this bioplastic can be an alternative solution that is more environmentally friendly to reduce the use of disposable plastic. In addition, this research also opens opportunities for further development of innovation and other applications of natural ingredients-based bioplastic.
