Analysis of the Risk Level of Salak Farming in Rumah Lengo Village, Sinembah Tanjung Muda Hulu District, Deli Serdang Regency

Introduction

Salak farming is a significant contributor to the local economy in Rumah Lengo village, Sinembah Tanjung Muda Hulu District, Deli Serdang Regency. However, like any agricultural activity, salak farming is not without its risks. In this study, we aim to analyze the income from salak farmers and the risks they face, including production, price, and income risks. The study was conducted in 2019 by Johel Andreas Pratama, an agribusiness student, under the guidance of Mr. Dr. Rulainda Purnomo Wibowo, Sp., M.Ec., and Mrs. Dr. Ir. Tavi Supriana, MS.

Methodology

The study used a purposive method to determine the study area and a census method to select 35 samples. The census method is a technique used to collect data from every member of a population, which in this case, consisted of 35 salak farmers in Rumah Lengo village.

Results

The results of the study showed that salak farming in Rumah Lengo village provided a significant profit with an annual income of Rp 88,072,634. The average land area of the farmers was 0.71 ha. However, despite the benefits, there are several risks that need attention, including:

Production Risk

Production risk is a significant concern for salak farmers in Rumah Lengo village. This risk comes from various factors, such as:

Pest attacks: Salak trees are susceptible to pest attacks, which can lead to significant losses in production.

Price Risk

Price risk is another significant concern for salak farmers in Rumah Lengo village. This risk comes from market fluctuations, which can impact the price offered by middlemen. The price offered by middlemen is often unstable, depending on market demand, which can cause uncertainty for farmers.

Income Risk

Income risk is a combination of production risk and price risk. The coefficient of variation (KV) for income risk is 0.32, which shows a large influence of production risk (0.22) and price risk (0.04). This means that salak farmers' income is not only influenced by production risk but also by price risk.

Conclusion

Despite the risks faced by salak farmers in Rumah Lengo village, the study concluded that salak farming deserves to be continued and can accept the existing risks. This shows that with good management and deeper knowledge about effective agricultural practices, these risks can be minimized.

Recommendations

In the context of the local economy, the success of salak farming not only provides benefits for farmers but also contributes to the village economy. Therefore, it is essential for the government and related institutions to provide support through:

Access to market information: Providing access to market information to help farmers make informed decisions.
Policies that support price stability: Implementing policies that support price stability to reduce price risk.
