Introduction

The increasing demand for renewable energy sources has led to a growing interest in the development of sustainable catalysts for the conversion of vegetable oils into valuable products. One such catalyst is Sarulla Natural Zeolite (SNZ), a naturally occurring mineral that has been modified and characterized in this study as a catalyst material for the hydrocracking reaction of rubber seed oil (Hevea Brasiliensis sp). The hydrocracking reaction is a complex process that involves the cracking of large molecules into smaller ones, resulting in the production of gasoline, diesel, and heavy oil fractions.

Modification and Characterization of SNZ

The modification and characterization of SNZ as a catalyst material involved several stages and methods. The process started with the activation of SNZ using 3M HCl at 90 ° C for 30 minutes through the reflux method, which produced SNZ-AA. The next step was calcination at a temperature of 500 ° C with nitrogen gas flow to obtain SNZ-CAL. This process was followed by the impregnation of Ni, CO, and Ni-MO and Co-MO metal combinations through the wet impregnation method with precursor salt solution. After that, the reflux process was carried out at 80 ° C for 5 hours, which ended with evaporation and drying at 120 ° C. The catalyst was then oxidized and reduced under certain conditions to get various types of catalysts that were ready to be tested.

Catalyst Analysis and Characterization

Catalyst characterization was carried out using various techniques, including FT-IR, XRD, XRF, and SEM, as well as measurement of surface area by BET method. The results of the FT-IR analysis showed that acid activation produced dealumination, so that the Zeolite tetrahedral frame was more effective. In XRD analysis, it appeared that the acid and calcination activation process did not damage the structure of zeolite crystals, while BET analysis indicated an increase in the specific surface area of the SNZ-AA catalyst to 121.152 m²/G and SNZ-CAL to 107.297 m²/g.

However, the development of Ni, CO, and Ni-Mo and Co-MO metal combinations resulted in a decrease in specific surface area and an increase in the average pore. Although there was a decrease in peak intensity in the diffractogram, the structure of zeolite crystals was maintained.

Catalyst Activity Test in Hydrocracking Reaction

The activity test was carried out on the reaction of the hydrocracking of rubber seed oil using a fixed bed reactor system made of stainless steel. Variations in the catalyst ratio to bait (1: 2, 1: 4, and 1: 6) and temperature variations (400 ° C, 450 ° C, and 500 ° C) were used to identify optimal conditions. Liquid products produced from this reaction consisted of gasoline fractions (C6-C12), Diesel (C13-C20), and heavy oil (> C20).

From the results of the study, the optimum conversion of the liquid product using the SNZ-cal catalyst reached 80.60% in the catalyst ratio: Bait 1: 2 with a temperature of 500 ° C. The product had the highest selectivity for the gasoline fraction of 37.31%. Ni/SNZ-Cal catalysts showed the highest selectivity of the gasoline fraction, reaching 86.25%, followed by CO/SNZ-CAL-CAL catalysts (83.19%), Ni-MO/SNZ-CAL (81.86%), and CO-MO/SNZ-CAL (78.96%).

Conclusion

Sarulla natural zeolite modification through the process of activation and metal impregnation significantly affects its performance as a catalyst in the hydrocracking reaction. This study not only highlighted the potential of SNZ as an effective catalyst, but also provides valuable insights on how to improve product efficiency and selectivity in the process of conversion of vegetable oils. These results can open the way for further research in the development of zeolite-based catalysts for renewable energy applications.
