Plankton Diversity in Sei Nipah Waters, Sei Nagalawan Village, Perbaungan District: A Study on the Abundance and Relationship with Physical and Chemical Parameters

Introduction

Located in Perbaungan District, Serdang Bedagai Regency, Sei Nipah waters are a vital component of the surrounding community, serving as a residence for residents of Sei Nagalawan Village, a hub for fisheries activities, and a popular tourist destination. However, the increasing human activities in the area have the potential to impact the diversity of plankton and water quality. This study aims to explore the abundance of plankton, diversity of types, and the relationship between physical and chemical parameters and plankton diversity in Sei Nipah waters.

Background

Sei Nipah waters are a complex ecosystem that supports a diverse range of aquatic life, including phytoplankton and zooplankton. Phytoplankton are microscopic plant-like organisms that form the base of the aquatic food web, while zooplankton are small animal-like organisms that feed on phytoplankton. The diversity of plankton in Sei Nipah waters is influenced by various physical and chemical factors, including temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and nutrient levels.

Methodology

This study was conducted between September and October 2020, with three observations made every two weeks. At each observation station, plankton samples were taken three times at different times, namely at 08.00, 12.00, and 16.00 WIB. Measurement of water quality was carried out at three station points with an in-situ method for parameters such as temperature, salinity, pH, DO, and brightness, as well as the ex-situ method to measure total nitrogen and phosphate.

Results

The results of this study showed that the diversity of phytoplankton in each station was in the medium category, while the diversity of zooplankton was low. The relationship between temperature, brightness, DO, pH, and salinity to phytoplankton diversity shows a very strong and unidirectional relationship. Conversely, the relationship between the speed of current and total nitrogen to the diversity of phytoplankton is detected weak and not in the same direction. For phosphate, there is a strong relationship but not in the same direction with phytoplankton diversity.

On the other hand, for zooplankton, the relationship of temperature and brightness shows a weak but unidirectional relationship, while the relationship of current and phosphate to the diversity of zooplankton is strong and unidirectional. DO quality also shows a relationship that is in line with the diversity of zooplankton, while pH and salinity show a connection that is not in the same direction. Total nitrogen affects the diversity of zooplankton with relatively strong relationships but also not in the same direction.

The results of this study suggest that the diversity of plankton in Sei Nipah waters is influenced by a number of physical and chemical factors. The strong and unidirectional relationship between temperature, brightness, DO, pH, and salinity to phytoplankton diversity indicates that these factors play a crucial role in shaping the phytoplankton community in the area. Conversely, the weak and not in the same direction relationship between the speed of current and total nitrogen to the diversity of phytoplankton suggests that these factors have a limited impact on phytoplankton diversity.

For zooplankton, the weak but unidirectional relationship between temperature and brightness suggests that these factors have a limited impact on zooplankton diversity. However, the strong and unidirectional relationship between current and phosphate to the diversity of zooplankton indicates that these factors play a crucial role in shaping the zooplankton community in the area.
