Introduction

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia). Patients with diabetes mellitus often have difficulty in managing their blood sugar levels, mainly due to lack of information about the right diet and non-compliance in carrying out the recommended diet. One approach that can help is to provide nutritional assistance and consultation, which serves to increase knowledge, attitudes, and behavior in overcoming nutritional problems through proper eating patterns. Nutrition consultation is a crucial aspect of diabetes management, as it helps patients understand the importance of diet in controlling blood sugar levels.

Background of the Study

Diabetes mellitus is a significant public health concern worldwide, with a growing number of elderly patients affected by this disease. In Indonesia, diabetes mellitus is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, particularly among the elderly. The Padang Bulan Health Center in Medan is one of the primary healthcare facilities that provide services to the community, including diabetes management. However, the effectiveness of diabetes management at this health center is limited by the lack of nutritional assistance and consultation services. This study aims to evaluate the effect of assistance and nutritional consultation on controlling blood sugar levels in the elderly with diabetes mellitus in Padang Bulan Health Center, Medan.

Methodology

This study uses a quasi-experimental design with the One Group Pretest-Posttest method. In this study, respondents totaling 22 people received treatment in the form of nutrition consultations, and their blood sugar levels were measured before and after the treatment. Data obtained through examination of blood sugar levels and questionnaires that evaluate the diet of respondents. Data analysis was carried out using the univariate and bivariate methods, as well as the paired sample t-test test, which showed significant results with the value of P = 0,000 (p <0.05). These results indicate that there is a significant effect between nutrition consultation assistance on controlling blood sugar levels in the elderly with diabetes mellitus.

Results

Before the action was carried out, only 59.1% of respondents followed the eating pattern correctly. However, after nutritional assistance and consultation, this percentage increased to 86.4%. This confirms how important the role of medical personnel is, especially nurses, in providing correct and accurate information to patients. Through nutritional assistance and consultation, patients can be taught how to adjust the right diet, which in turn can help them in managing their blood sugar levels better.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that nutrition consultation assistance has a significant effect on controlling blood sugar levels in the elderly with diabetes mellitus. This is consistent with previous studies that have shown the importance of nutrition consultation in diabetes management. The increase in the percentage of respondents who followed the eating pattern correctly after nutritional assistance and consultation suggests that this approach can be effective in improving diabetes management.

Conclusion

This study emphasizes the importance of nutrition consultation as one of the effective methods to increase patient knowledge and skills, so that it can regulate the right diet. This is very important in the effort to control diabetes mellitus, especially for the elderly who are more vulnerable to complications caused by this disease. Continuing the education and nutritional assistance program at the Puskesmas is the right step to improve the quality of life of diabetes mellitus patients in the region.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Nutrition consultation services should be integrated into the diabetes management program at the Padang Bulan Health Center, Medan.
Education and training should be provided to medical personnel, especially nurses, on the importance of nutrition consultation in diabetes management.
Continuing education and nutritional assistance program should be continued at the Puskesmas to improve the quality of life of diabetes mellitus patients in the region.
