Introduction

A study was conducted to examine the relationship between untreated dental caries and short nutritional status or stunting in students aged between 6 and 12 years.

The Consequences of Untreated Caries

Untreated dental caries can lead to a range of serious consequences. The PUFA index (pulpitis, ulceration, fistula, and abscess) is used to evaluate the clinical impact of untreated caries. As a result of dental caries that are not treated, children can experience pain that can interfere with the process of chewing food and the quality of their sleep. This can lead to a decrease in nutritional intake needed for optimal growth and development. The consequences of untreated caries can be far-reaching, affecting not only the child's oral health but also their overall health and well-being.

Methodology

This study used an analytic survey method with a cross-sectional design to examine the relationship between untreated caries and short nutritional status. The study population consisted of 156 children in the school, and data regarding caries was measured using the PUFA index. The nutritional status was measured using a Staturemeter that was converted to Z-Score height according to age (TB/U). The data analysis used the Chi-Square test and correlation test to examine the relationship between untreated caries and short nutritional status.

Results

The results of the study showed a significant relationship between untreated caries and short nutritional status. The prevalence of stunting in groups that had a higher PUFA score reached 62.4%, while those who did not experience stunting were only 37.6%. The results also showed a strong negative relationship between PUFA and Z-Score TB/U scores, where the higher the PUFA score, the lower the Z-Score TB/U value. This suggests that children with untreated caries have a higher risk of stunting.
