Pakpak-Batak Toba Language Shift Pattern in the Border Region of Juma Teguh Village and Juma Siulok Village: A Sociolinguistic Study

Language shift can be seen as a phenomenon in which a language begins to be abandoned by the speaker community. In the context of the community in the border region between Juma Teguh Village and Juma Siulok Village in Siratian Nempu District, Dairi Regency, this phenomenon occurs in Pakpak and Batak Toba. In this study, the main focus is to understand the pattern of language shift in the family realm and the factors that cause the shift. The research subject includes families that have a mixture of marriage between the Pakpak tribe and the Toba Batak tribe. Qualitative research methods are used, by collecting data through observation, interviews, and documentation.

Patterns of parents to children: This pattern shows that parents prefer to communicate using Toba Batak language to their children. As a result, children tend to get used to the Toba Batak language early on, which in turn accelerates the shift in language.
Patterns of children's relationship to parents: Interestingly, this relationship pattern shows that younger children tend to speak in Toba Batak when interacting with their parents, which further strengthens the use of this language in the family.
