Methodology

This study employed multiple linear regression analysis to examine the relationship between economic growth and several independent variables, including poverty (X1), population mobility (X2), and Human Development Index (HDI or X3). The data used in this study were sourced from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of North Sumatra Province, covering the period from 2012 to 2021.

Results

The analysis yielded a multiple linear regression equation that illustrates the effect of independent variables on the dependent variable:

The F-count value obtained using a simultaneous test was 0.148, which was smaller than the F-table value of 4.75. This result indicates that there is no significant influence between the level of poverty, population mobility, and human development index on economic growth in Karo Regency in the period studied.

Discussion

The results of this study provide valuable insights into the economic conditions in Karo Regency. Although the level of poverty, population mobility, and HDI are factors that are generally expected to affect economic growth, this analysis shows that not all indicators have a significant direct influence.

There are several factors that can explain this finding. First, a high level of poverty may not be directly proportional to economic growth if it is not balanced with the right economic policy. In this context, although there are efforts to reduce poverty, without the support of other sectors such as investment, infrastructure, and education, economic growth can still be hampered.

Low mobility often has an impact on the low innovation and creativity that can increase the economic competitiveness of an area. On the other hand, high mobility, if not managed properly, can cause problems such as unplanned urbanization and other social problems.

Third, although HDI is an important indicator for measuring the quality of life of people, its effect on economic growth is not always direct. HDI includes aspects of health, education, and income, but in the context of Karo Regency, there may be other variables that are more dominant affecting economic growth.

Conclusion

In conclusion, although factors such as poverty, population mobility, and HDI need to be a concern in development planning, it is also important to consider various other aspects that can affect economic growth. Comprehensive and integrative policies are needed to encourage sustainable economic growth in Karo Regency. This certainly requires collaboration from various parties, including the government, the community, and the private sector.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Poverty reduction: Efforts to reduce poverty should be balanced with the support of other sectors such as investment, infrastructure, and education to promote economic growth.
Population mobility management: Population mobility should be managed properly to avoid problems such as unplanned urbanization and other social problems.
Comprehensive policies: Comprehensive and integrative policies are needed to encourage sustainable economic growth in Karo Regency, requiring collaboration from various parties, including the government, the community, and the private sector.

Limitations

This study has several limitations. First, the data used in this study were sourced from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of North Sumatra Province, which may not be comprehensive or up-to-date. Second, the analysis employed multiple linear regression, which may not capture the complex relationships between variables. Finally, the study focused on Karo Regency, which may not be representative of other regions in Indonesia.
