Abstract

The Belawan Sea, located in Medan, Indonesia, is a potential source of yeast that can degrade diesel oil. This study aims to isolate yeast from the sea water and test its ability to degrade diesel oil. The isolation process was carried out using the Salt Solution Stone Mineral Media (SMSSE) enriched with yeast extract and added 2% diesel oil. The results showed that three yeast isolates, namely GBN.1, GBN.2, and GBN.3, were obtained. These isolates were then tested for their ability to degrade diesel oil with a concentration of 1% and 3% through gravimetric analysis. The results showed that the isolate mixture (consortium) has better degradation capability than a single isolate. The consortium succeeded in degrading 68% of diesel oil at a concentration of 1% and 65% at a concentration of 3%. Statistical analysis showed that GBN.2 has the best potential in degrading diesel oil. This research has several important implications, including the discovery of a sea yeast that can degrade diesel oil, the use of the dozen consortium, and the identification of GBN.2 isolates as a yeast with the best degradation potential.
