The Impact of Abortion from Unwanted Pregnancy on Women Commercial Sex Workers in Medan Petisah District in 2015

Introduction

The maternal mortality rate (MMR) is a crucial indicator of public health, and it is one of the targets set in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Unfortunately, in 2015, Indonesia was estimated to be unable to achieve the set targets, with a mortality rate of 102 deaths per 100,000 live births. One of the factors contributing to this high mortality rate is the practice of unsafe abortion, mainly due to unwanted pregnancy (KTD). This study aims to explore the behavior of women commercial sex workers related to pregnancy prevention and unsafe abortion practices.

Background

The issue of unwanted pregnancy and unsafe abortion is a significant concern in Indonesia, particularly among women commercial sex workers. These women are often at a higher risk of experiencing unwanted pregnancy due to their occupation, which may involve multiple sexual partners and a lack of access to reproductive health services. The consequences of unsafe abortion can be severe, including maternal mortality, morbidity, and long-term physical and psychological trauma.

Methodology

This study was conducted in Medan Petisah District using a qualitative descriptive survey method. The research informants consisted of five commercial sex workers, as well as NGO members and pimps. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, where data was obtained through in-depth interviews until the information collected was quite representative. The data collected was then analyzed to gain a deeper understanding of this issue.

Results

The results of this study showed that most informants had a strong desire to prevent unwanted pregnancy. However, they often resorted to abortion in an unsafe manner without considering the risks that may arise. Their knowledge and understanding related to reproductive health, including information about pregnancy, was still relatively low. Many of them only realized that they were pregnant after two months. Shame was an important factor that influenced their decision to do abortion, especially if the pregnancy occurred without a husband.

Discussion

These findings highlight the importance of the role of government in reviewing health laws related to abortion, to be more in favor of the interests of women. The government is also advised to provide safe health services, such as special clinics with trained medical personnel who understand about unwanted pregnancy problems. With adequate access to adequate health services, women are expected to be able to handle this problem better and reduce the risks associated with unsafe abortion.

It is also essential to pay attention to the social and psychological impacts experienced by women commercial sex workers due to unwanted pregnancy. In addition, increasing education and counseling regarding reproductive health is a crucial step in preventing unwanted pregnancy and dangerous abortion practices. Thus, efforts to reduce maternal mortality rates can be achieved and overall public health can be improved.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of addressing the issue of unwanted pregnancy and unsafe abortion among women commercial sex workers in Medan Petisah District. The government and other stakeholders must work together to provide safe health services and increase education and counseling regarding reproductive health. By doing so, we can reduce the risks associated with unsafe abortion and improve overall public health.
