Nine treatments were tested, including a control group and eight different insecticide treatments: deltamethrin (0.05% and 0.1%), chlorpyrifos (0.05% and 0.1%), Dimshipo (0.05% and 0.1%), and dimetoat (0.05% and 0.1%). Each treatment was replicated three times. The observed parameters included the percentage of mortality, the time of pest death, the level of plant damage, and histopathology.

Results

The results of this study showed that the 0.05% deltamethrin was the most effective and efficient insecticide, with a 100% mortality rate on the third day after the application. The fastest larvae death time occurred in all treatments except for the 0.05% deltamethrin treatment, which took 1 day after application. In contrast, the longest larvae death time occurred in the dimetoat 0.05% treatment, which took 1.33 days after the application. The highest level of plant damage was recorded in the treatment of 0.05% dimetoat and Dimshipo 0.1% (50%), while the lowest level of plant damage occurred in the Deltamethrin treatment (0.05% and 0.1%) and Chlorpyrifos 0.05% (25%).

This study provides strong evidence that 0.05% deltamethrin is an effective and efficient insecticide for controlling caterpillars in the vegetative phase of oil palm.
