Microplastic has become a pressing environmental issue worldwide, including in the waters of Belawan, Medan City, North Sumatra Province. The high production of plastic waste in these waters has led to microplastic contamination, which accumulates in the bodies of blood shells, a popular and economically valuable type of seafood. This study aims to analyze the shape, number of microplastics, polymers, and estimated microplastic consumption for humans who consume blood shells in Belawan waters.

Blood shells, or Anadara granosa, are a type of seafood that is widely consumed in Medan City. However, the increasing presence of microplastics in these waters poses a significant threat to human health and the marine ecosystem. Methodology and Data Collection

Field data collection was carried out in January 2023 by collecting shells and sediment samples in three different locations: ports, open sea, and mangrove forests. From each location, 10 blood shells were taken and about 1 kg of sediment. Microplastic analysis of blood shell samples was done using a 10% KOH solution, followed by microplastic identification using a stereo microscope.

The microplastic abundance in blood shells at stations I, II, and III are 64.04 particles/dry weight, 44.19 particles/dry weight, and 54.29 particles/dry weight, respectively. The results of the FTIR test revealed that the types of polymers detected are polypropylene, polystyrene, and polyethylene. The estimated number of microplastic consumed by the people of Medan through blood shells reaches 16.90 ± 2.53 MP per year.
