Introduction

The Karo tribe is one of the many indigenous tribes found in Indonesia, known for their rich cultural heritage and unique traditions. This study aims to analyze the personality of the Karo tribe through the lens of the Big Five Personality theory, which is one of the leading approaches in personality psychology. The Big Five Personality theory proposes that there are five broad dimensions of personality: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. This study aims to explore how these dimensions manifest in the Karo tribe and whether there are any unique personality traits that are specific to this tribe.

Methodology

This study used an accidental sampling method to collect data from 1040 respondents from the Karo tribe who live in various locations, including Medan, Kabanjahe, Berastagi, Sibolangit, Delitua, Binjai, and Jakarta. The age range of the respondents was between 18 to 60 years. The data was analyzed using the exploratory factor analysis method with the help of the SPSS version 20 program.

Results

The results of this study revealed that all five original factors of the Big Five Personality theory could be found in the Karo tribal community. However, this research also identified a new factor that is typical of the Karo tribe, which is a factor called "appreciation." This factor shows a high level of appreciation for cultural and art values that exist in the Karo tribal community. With a composite reliability value of 0.78, this factor is proven to have a good consistency in measurement.

The new "appreciation" factor found in this study provides a deeper picture of how the Karo tribal people respect and preserve their arts and culture. This can be seen from various forms of expression of art, such as dances, music, and handicrafts, which are continuously maintained and developed by the younger generation.

By understanding the personality of the Karo tribal people through the Big Five Personality theory, we not only get insight into individual characteristics, but also about how cultural values affect their social behavior and interaction. This research can be a foothold for further studies, both in the context of psychology and anthropology, to explore more deeply about social dynamics in the Karo tribal society.
