Students are individuals who are in the transition phase to maturity, usually between the ages of 18 to 25 years. At this time, they began to be responsible for their self-development and lives. The initial stage of maturity is often marked by the search for identity, discovery, formation of identity, and the process of adaptation to various changes. In this context, gratitude plays a significant role. Gratitude is a positive attitude that can influence how individuals view life and respect the little things and contributions of others.

The Importance of Gratitude for Students

Gratitude is essential for students as it can help them navigate the challenges of academic life. Students often face academic pressure, social challenges, and stress, which can negatively impact their mental health and well-being. However, by cultivating a sense of gratitude, students can develop a positive attitude towards life, which can help them cope with these challenges. Gratitude can also help students build good social relations with friends and the environment, leading to a more harmonious and productive academic environment.

Research Methodology

This research focuses on exploring gratitude among students of the University of North Sumatra, taking into account the difference between male and female students. This research is based on the theory of gratitude proposed by Watkins, where researchers collect data from 200 students at the university. The method used is a quantitative descriptive method, with a data collection tool in the form of an Adult Version of the Gratitude Scale, specifically designed for this research.

The scale is arranged in the form of Likert with 15 items that cover various aspects of gratitude that have been identified. The items on the scale include:

Data Analysis

After the data is collected, descriptive statistical analysis is applied to understand more about the level of gratitude among students. The results of this study show that as many as 180 people or 90% of students are in the high category in terms of gratitude. As many as 20 people or 10% of students are in the medium category, while no students are included in the low category, which shows that gratitude is very strong among students of the University of North Sumatra.

Conclusion

From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the majority of students show a high level of gratitude. This has positive implications, not only for their mental health, but also in building good social relations with friends and the environment. Gratitude can function as a tool to reduce stress and increase life satisfaction, which is very important for students who often face academic pressure and social challenges.

By understanding the importance of gratitude among students, educational institutions can design programs that support the development of this attitude. For example, self-development activities, seminars on positive psychology, or workshops that aim to increase awareness of the values of gratitude. Thus, not only individuals who benefit, but also more harmonious and productive academic environment.
