The Relationship between Body Mass Index and Physical Activity to Dynamic Balance and Sleep Patterns in the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra

Introduction

In the context of global health, overweight and obesity have become a serious problem that can affect the quality of life of individuals, including among students. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), being overweight and obesity is a risk factor that contributes to death, placing it as a 5th cause of death worldwide. With more than 2.8 million people dying every year due to complications related to obesity, it is essential to understand how the body's mass index (BMI) and physical activity can affect other aspects of health such as dynamic balance and sleep patterns.

The Importance of Physical Health in Students

Good physical conditions not only have an impact on physical health but also have the potential to improve the quality of sleep and the ability to maintain balance. These are essential for students who often experience high academic pressure. Maintaining a healthy BMI and engaging in regular physical activity can help students to manage stress, improve their mood, and enhance their overall well-being.

Research Purpose and Methodology

This study aims to analyze the relationship between BMI and the level of physical activity to dynamic balance and sleep patterns in students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra. The method used in this study is non-experimental observational with a cross-sectional approach. The sample population was a student of the 2018 Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra, with the minimum number of respondents needed was 72 people. Data was collected through various measuring devices, including BMI calculations, modified bass tests to assess dynamic balance, as well as the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire for sleep patterns. All of these data were analyzed using SPSS software.

Research Results

The results showed a significant relationship between BMI and dynamic balance with the value of P = 0.006, which indicates that changes in the BMI can affect a person's ability to maintain dynamic balance. However, no significant relationship was found between physical activity and dynamic balance (P> 0.05). In addition, the analysis of the relationship between BMI and sleep patterns produces a P value of 1,000, which shows the absence of statistical relationships. Likewise, the level of physical activity is also not significantly related to sleep patterns (P> 0.05).

Additional Analysis and Explanation

This finding gives an important insight that the BMI plays a role in the ability of dynamic balance. In this context, students with higher BMI may have difficulty in maintaining balance, which can be caused by physical factors such as muscle strength and coordination. Meanwhile, a low level of physical activity may not be enough to significantly affect balance, shows that physical activity needs to be maintained in the right intensity and frequency to have a positive impact.

On the other hand, the results that show the absence of a relationship between BMI and sleep patterns raise further questions. This could be caused by other factors that are not examined in this study, such as academic stress or student sleep habits that tend to be irregular.

Conclusion

Overall, this study shows that the body's mass index has a significant relationship with a dynamic balance of students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra. However, no significant relationship was found between physical activity and dynamic balance or sleep patterns. These findings arouse awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy BMI, and encouraging students to improve their physical activity in order to maintain better health and quality of life.

Through this research, it is expected that there will be more attention to the physical health of students who not only focus on academic aspects, but also balance and sleep patterns that are an integral part of everyday life.
