One of the potential renewable energy sources in this area is hydro energy from river flow.

Background of the Study

The Langkat Regency in North Sumatra Province has a vast river flow, which can be utilized as a source of hydro energy. The river flow has a significant potential to generate electricity, and this study aims to investigate the feasibility of constructing a macrohydro power plant in the Langkat Regency river flow. The study will focus on the geographical and hydrological conditions of the river, as well as the potential benefits of developing a micro hydro power plant in the area.

Methodology

The F.J. Method was used to calculate the mainstay debit as a comparison value. This method requires rainfall data, evaporation, and water catchment areas. In addition, Flow Duration Curve (FDC) was used to determine the discharge in accordance with the probability of 90%. The calculation results using the F.J. Method showed a plan discharge of 5.19 m³/dtk. Furthermore, the analysis of the carrier channel design produced a square-shaped dimension with a width of 4 m and a height of 2 m, as well as a 34.99 m penstock pipe.

The implementation of this project not only has the potential to increase electricity access, but also strengthen the sustainability of local energy and economy in North Sumatra Province.
