The Relationship Between Physical Activity and Sleep Quality in USU FK Students

Introduction

Sleep is a fundamental human need that is essential for our daily lives. For students, sleep quality is particularly crucial as it can significantly impact their academic performance, mood, social relationships, and overall well-being. However, many students often experience sleep quality shortages due to increased lectures, social relationships, and other factors. One aspect that can influence sleep quality is physical activity. Regular physical activity can improve fitness, mood, and concentration, as well as contribute to better sleep quality. This study aims to investigate the relationship between physical activity and sleep quality among students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra (FK USU).

Background

Sleep quality is a critical aspect of a student's life, and it is essential to understand the factors that influence it. Physical activity is one such factor that can have a significant impact on sleep quality. Regular physical activity can help regulate the body's natural sleep cycles, reduce stress and anxiety, and increase physical fatigue, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep. However, the relationship between physical activity and sleep quality is complex, and more research is needed to understand this relationship.

Methodology

This study used an analytical research design with a cross-sectional approach to investigate the relationship between physical activity and sleep quality among USU FK students. The study was conducted in Medan, specifically in the USU FK environment. Data was collected through a questionnaire that included information on sleep history and the level of physical activity. The total sampling method was used to select the participants. The data obtained was then analyzed using the Chi-Square test method.

Results

The results of this study showed that the majority of USU FK students (64.7%) were included in the active category in physical activity. However, the majority (69%) of USU FK students were also included in the category of poor sleep quality. The study found that students who were classified as active in physical activity had a significantly higher chance of getting better sleep quality than students who were included in the category of inactive/passive in physical activity. In fact, the study found that students who were active in physical activity had a 5,073 times greater chance of getting better sleep quality than students who were inactive/passive.

Discussion

The results of this study provide strong evidence of the positive relationship between physical activity and sleep quality among USU FK students. These findings are in line with many previous studies that have shown that physical activity can improve the quality of sleep with various mechanisms, such as:

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

USU FK students are encouraged to increase their physical activity by doing regular exercise, such as jogging, swimming, or gymnastics.
USU FK Campus can provide facilities and programs that support student physical activities, such as sports fields, sports classes, and joint sports activities.
The importance of education about the benefits of physical activity for sleep quality needs to be encouraged to all students.

Conclusion

This study shows a strong relationship between physical activity and sleep quality among USU FK students. Better physical activity has a greater chance of producing good sleep quality. By increasing physical activity, USU FK students can obtain significant health benefits, including improving the quality of sleep that has a positive impact on aspects of their lives. Therefore, it is essential to promote physical activity among USU FK students to improve their sleep quality and overall well-being.

Limitations

This study has some limitations that need to be considered. The study used a cross-sectional approach, which may not provide a complete understanding of the relationship between physical activity and sleep quality. Additionally, the study relied on self-reported data, which may be subject to bias. Future studies should use a longitudinal design and objective measures to confirm the findings of this study.
