Introduction

The transesterification of castor oil using an MGO-based catalyst that is impregnated in Mesoporous silica has shown promising potential in improving the efficiency of the process. This study aims to examine the effects of MGO's catalyst mass variation on the transesterification process, using Mesoporous Silica synthesized from tetraethylorthosilicate (Teos) as a source of silica and ricinoleate methyl ester as a template. The impregnation process involves mixing the silica mesoporous with Mg (NO3) 2 · 6H2O solution (as MGO 30%) and stirring for 8 hours at room temperature, followed by drying in the oven and calcination at 650 ° C for 8 hours. The catalyst produced is then applied to the transesterification of castor oil with the catalyst mass variation of 1%, 2%, and 3% of the mass of castor oil, during the reaction for 4 hours at 65 ° C using methanol.

Catalyst Characterization

The results of impregnation product characterization are carried out using FT-IR, XRD, SEM-EDX, and BET. FT-IR data shows the presence of Silanol (Si-OH) and Siloxana (Si-O-Si) groups, which are the characteristics of silica material, as well as the emergence of absorption in the wave number 408.91 cm⁻¹, which is the culmination of the MG-O group. XRD analysis shows that the material is amorphous with a decreased intensity and a shift in the main peak of diffractogram to a smaller 2 diffraction angle, as well as the appearance of a typical MGO peak at an angle of 2θ 30.34 °. SEM-EDX results support the existence of MGO metal oxide formed. Type IV isotherm curve and Histeresis type H3 loop obtained from BET tests show that the dominant pore size in silica material before and after impregnation is 14.27 Nm and 15,4536 Nm, which is included in the mesopori size.

Transesterification Efficiency

From the data above, it can be concluded that MGO impregnation of silica material has been successfully carried out. The product of castor oil transesterification is then analyzed using FT-IR and GC-MS. The FT-IR spectrum shows the formation of the Ricinoleate Methyl Esther, which is marked by the emergence of the C-O-C group strain vibration on the wave number of 1237.5 cm⁻¹, 1162.9 cm⁻¹, and 1028.7 cm⁻¹. Based on the GC-MS results for the three variations, the best results are obtained in the MGO/MS catalyst with a concentration of 2%, which shows the conversion of Ricinoleate Methyl Esther at 83.09%.
